Jockey's Ridge State Park

Jockey's Ridge State Park in Nags Head, NC, welcomes leashed dogs. Some trails will take you into multiple environments, including wetlands, sandy beaches and grassy dunes. While this pet-friendly park also allows dogs on the sand dunes, note that sand spurs are present (ouch!). The sand can also reach temperatures 30 degrees higher than the air temperature, so ensure that Fido's paws are protected and water is always available during hotter months. Visit Website

    A great time!

Josie had a great time exploring and going sand boarding with me (you can rent sand boards for $20 for up to 4 hours from Kitty Hawk Hang Gliding School located in the parking lot). I kept her secure between my legs starting out on small dunes. The official website stated a 6 foot leash is required so that is what we did, but be careful- I saw an unleashed dog while there- luckily he had good recall. Despite it being February (the off season), we had a good time.

    A sandy good time

My mutt is terrified of water, but he loves sand. Jockeys Ridge was perfect for him! We went around 9 am before the sand got too hot and I kept him on a 6-foot leash as required. He loved it and even got a pat from an employee there. We'll definitely go back.
