Convenient, but not the best park

We recently moved here. We never had an issue at any of the local parks or with dogs in our former town. My dog is not aggressive - she’s just ball obsessed. I’m very good about keeping her focused, because I have put in a ton of time training and conditioning her. She is calm and isn’t interested in other dogs. Despite having a yard now, for her getting into the car and going to a park is a pick up of routine she’s had most of her life.

Here are the issues with this park:

There are owners here who care more about gossiping with their friends vs. watching/minding their dogs. On several occasions I saw owners chatting away or playing on their phones, while their dog defecated and they neglected to pick it up. Or their dog is anxious and barking non-stop or snapping at others.

Weekenders can be problematic. These dogs may only see the park 1-2 a week, and are trying to pack in all the socialization in a short burst. This is typical for every dog park on a weekend. Try to avoid it on the weekend or come late in the evening if your dog, like mine, isn’t interested.

There are dogs who come here who clearly lack training or are not getting enough mental/physical exercise. They are overly vocal, aggressive and have zero sense of boundaries. And that’s not limited to just the dogs.

The owners could also use some training vs. acting entitled or creating an unsafe environment for other owners and the dogs.

Ironically, the city has regulations, which many owners seem to ignore. https://virginiabeach.gov/services/animals-pets/dog-friendly-parks-beaches Unfortunately, the city doesn’t seem to enforce any rules around vaccinations. Nor is there a rule on whether dogs need to be fixed. The park grass is too high and not all owners pick up. You have been warned.

The folks who comes during off-peak seem nice. But again a lot depends on your dog’s tolerance, and whether you/your dog align with the so-called entitled “regulars” (aka the Karen’s/Ken’s, who don’t own the park). But I would keep a leash and a horn or some deterrent near by just in case…oh and look down when you walk.

No fee required -Just dog license and vaccination

There is no fee required. There are two fenced areas so if you don’t like your dogs playing with dogs on one side you can take them to the other side. My husband brings are Labradoodle regularly. There was an occasion when someone from out of town brought an aggressive pitbull with no license or vaccination and they had to call animal control. Those are unfortunate risks with any dog park anywhere. But visitors are welcome!

    Bad owners

I live about 5 minutes away and have brought our dogs several times. I have encountered owners who do not have a license nor shots for their dogs. they sneak their dogs in when it is unattended. The last straw was when a man brought his dog in that had kennel cough and my dog ended up getting it. I had gone at 7am when they opened and was the only one there until he came in. Told me that he thought he could get a run in before people showed up! Wrong! Not only that, but some dogs are just plain aggressive! I have two large dogs that only want to play ball and end up being mounted the entire time. Owners did NOTHING! I blame owners not the dogs. Its pretty bad when an AC officer tells me he wont bring his dogs to the dog parks in this area b/c people refuse to vaccinate and they just can't keep up with it. I think that people should be given some kind of swipe card and pin # in order to gain entry after they register!

Nancy's comment details the problem with this park. Some of the dog owners who have been bringing their dogs for 20+ years feel a sense of entitlement and claim seniority at this park as if it mattered. I'm new in the area, I just want to take my dog somewhere and maybe let him play with other dogs. I don't give 2 lollipops about how long you've been coming to this park and don't care about how much better you think your neighborhood is over everyone else's. Worry about your dog- Pick up after it. Stay out of people's business.

    Dog owner

Love this dog park. I am very glad that Lorri from Va Bch will not be coming back. that type of attitude is not what we want at "our" park. Of course dogs are going to gather at the gate cuz a new potential friend in coming in. Dog parks are for all dogs to play together. If you don't want to bring your little "prissy" dog to our park, that is fine with us. We only want people/dogs who want to join our family. We have been bringing our dogs there for almost 20 years now. It is a wonderful place and the staff there are super. I would not want to go anywhere else. So, Lorri - stay home. we don't want you here!!!

    Worst park ever.

Worst dog park I have ever been to with the worst dog owners. There is no separation between big and small dogs so they are all running together, which would be fine, except the huge dogs overran my small dog right when I got through the fence. Dog owners did nothing to stop their dogs from attacking my dog or me, and I left with a huge scratch on my leg from a bulldog whose owner did not step up to even attempt to stop his/her dog. I could hardly get through the fence to begin with because all of the big dogs were trying to get out. I am never coming here again.
