First time flying with my yorkie

I have a 4 lb yorkie and we are taking her home to the US. We are flying from the UK. It doesn't look like she can fly in-cabin because it is an international flight. How safe is it for her to be checked in as baggage? Are the animals taken care of during the flight? I've never traveled with her before and don't know what to expect. Will she be okay?
