Safe pet shipping?

Due to a family illness I need to take over care of a dog who is in New Mexico. Due to my own dog's illness it would be extremely tricky to go get him.

Is there any SAFE way to send a dog--too large for airline cabin travel--from NM to FL with minimal stress?

I have a similar situation. i took care of my daughter's dog who lives in another state, while she was out of the country and now she is back and the only airline i could find that allows you to ship your dog by plane WITHOUT a PASSENGER, is united airlines.
