Carmel California

G'day,

I currently live in Australia (am an American ex pat who has lived here for nearly 20 years because I married an Aussie) and am considering moving back to California for my retirement years. I would love to live in Carmel as I am originally from the bay area, love the Monterey coastline, and have read how it is so dog friendly. I am considering buying a retirement condo there when I reach retirement (SS) age which is only 4 years from now.

I have a few questions that may sound strange due to my having lived in Oz for such a long time (and some may consider them just strange period LOL! :oD) but here goes:

1. Are there very many species of snakes native to the Carmel woods/valley? I am guessing the pacific rattlesnake? The reason I ask is that I have terriers and one big problem I have here with owning them is trying to keep them away from the Common Eastern Brown snake which is very deadly! I am wondering if there are very many snakes in Carmel (In the Highlands and more bushy country) as one reason I want to move is to try and get away from the snakes!

2. Is it true that it does not get very hot there for much of the year? I'm a bit fed up with 40c (104F) degree heat non stop for several months out of the year and wish to move to a much cooler climate.

3. Are there small dog parks there? I mean areas where you can safely let small dogs off lead with their own kind LOL!

4. Are there good leash laws in Carmel? That is do they enforce leash laws at all? Here they do not and off lead and agro dogs off lead can and do cause a lot of problems when I'm out trying to walk my dogs.

I would love to hear from anybody out there who currently lives in Carmel California.

P.S. I am an artist and specialise in pet portraiture and am hoping to build up a business there doing dog portraits.

Thanks in advance for your help. :o)
