La Posada Hotel - Winslow, AZ
La Posada Hotel is a pet-friendly hotel in Winslow, AZ. Rated as one of the top 5 historic hotels in Arizona- La Posada was built in 1930 and was the last and most elegant of the Fred Harvey Hotels built by the Santa Fe Railroad. It was designed by Mary Colter- perhaps the greatest architect of the Southwest- as a fabulous Spanish hacienda. In its heyday- La Posada was a favorite retreat for Hollywood stars. Everybody stayed here- from Howard Hughes to John Wayne- Bob Hope to Dorthy Lamour- Albert Einstein to the Crown Prince of Japan. In the 1930s La Posada was the finest small hotel in the southwest- a romantic Spanish castle with 70 guest rooms- three dining rooms and grand public spaces. With the decline in rail travel- La Posada closed in 1957. Over the next 40 years the hotel narrowly escaped demolition. In 1997 a massive restoration project was begun- and today guests can again roam the original flagstone floors- play a game of chess next to a roaring fire in the ballroom- stroll past the petrified wood fountain in the secluded Mediterainian sunken garden- have a drink at the horseshoe bar in the Martini Lounge and a four star meal in the newly renovated Turquoise Room Restaurant- and spend a night in one of La Posada 37 fully restored guest rooms- many of which offer balcony views of our lawns and groves- some with whirlpool tubs and private fireplaces. Come to La Posada and step back in time. Stroll over 8 acres of lawns- groves and gardens. watch the clouds through the cottonwoods. Relax with a good book from our library. For adventure we will direct you to wonderful day trips- just as Fred Harvey planned years ago- to all the marvels of the region. See the Grand Canyon- the red rocks of Sedona- Monument Valley- the Hopi Mesas- Meteror Crater- the Petrified Forest and prehistoric ruins at Wupatki- Walnut Canyon and Homolovi. There is so much to explore in Northern Arizona- and there's no better base than La Posada. Come spend a few memorable days with us in high style along historic U.S- Route 66.

Heaven in the desert! No particular doggie perks, but this place is so much in a league of its own that it rates a 5 nonetheless. Although undergoing extensive refurbishment, it remains an oasis, with the work being done with discretion so as not to be an inconvenience to guests. We stayed in the 'Betty Grable' room, which has its own door leading to a small, unenclosed (at this point!) semi-private patio. There is also a large lawn area designated for dogs -- with scoopers and receptacles provided. All very convenient for late night potty runs! Surprisingly quiet for its location -- directly adjacent to the Sante Fe Railway. Staff is friendly. The restaurant located in the hotel is a separate business, and the service was quirky. The food was uneven -- breakfasts were extraordinary (hotel doesn't provide breakfast-- continental or other), but dinner was a bit of a let-down given the accolades they claim to have received (salmon overcooked and dry, service pushy and rushed). Nevertheless, staying at La Posada gives one the impression of what it might have been like to travel in privelige during more gracious and exciting times. It is lovely. Go there... and, take your dog!
