hope to clear up a review from Rude and Cramped
Dave in Cape May`
The guest unfortunately did not know that they were entering the room that my Mom occupies. There wasn't a hallway on the other side of the door. We keep a futon in the space that converts to a bed in the evening. We hadn't realized that the door was unlocked until the guest entered. We certainly weren't trying to be rude - just trying to prevent any privacy from being interrupted to their room as well as to my Mom's. Unfortunately the room with the exterior entrances can only access the rest of the house from the exterior. There isn't a hall to enter. Had there been one, the guest would certainly have been welcomed to use it... We apologize if they felt we were trying to lock them out of the house or being rude in any way. That certainly wasn't the case. All of our guests are encouraged to relax on our front porch and enjoy all common areas. Again we offer an apology for the misunderstanding. We certainly wish we would have known at the time so that we could have given the guest an explanation.

Will come back again

When I was reading the reviews I did have mixed feelings about it when I saw the word excentric, because that word just did not sound positive. Well I will be the first to admit I was wrong and the word EXCENTRIC, now has a positive meaning to me. We arrived and was greated at the door, by Terry, the propriotor's mom. She was an elderly lady who our trip better. Best of all our two dogs absolutely loved her. We had a great covered porch we could sit on and enjoy talking with her or other guest. They had a fenced in area that all the dogs could mingle in or they could just stay in their own private fenced in area or balony. My wife and I would definately stay here again. I have some friends who might think negative of this place because it did not have internet access, but for me it was great to just get away from all that. It ws 5 days of heaven. The room we stayed in was decorated with a bunch of dog theme items and we loved it. We had had a bed we could sprawl out on and be comfortable. Plus had a couch and chair we could sit on if we wanted to. Our room had a small refrigeator which met our needs since we have some medicine for our dog that needs refrigerated. Also had a cute table. Will definately agree that we never heard any rude comments from anyone We actually are planning another trip to this area, and know exactly where we will stay.

OPPS FORGOT THE RATING AND WROTE THE TITLE. DEFINATLEY A 5 PAW RATING For a hotel that welcomes pets, the highland house is very clean and nice. With all it's pet oriented knick-knacks, you feel just like you're At grandmas house. If your looking a modern day type Hilton hotel bed and breakfast, this is not the place to stay. But if you want a cute and cozy little room, the highland house has it. The bed and breakfast is only about 4 blocks from the beach, a 10 minute walk. Terry, the mother of the owner of the highland house, is one of the most amazing people I've ever met. At 90 years old, She cooks breakfast for everyone single handedly. Although some people might say the breakfast was small, we were served two pancakes, eggs in any form, juice, coffee, tea, fruit salad, and two types of cake, everything home made. This is a great hotel to bring your furry friends, and I recommend staying here.

“Doggie and Kitty Cat go on vacation”
Lola in Bergan County , NJ
This is one of the first places we've ever seen where we could take not only our dog but our cat on vacation too, since they're both young, we didn't want to leave them at home or board them. Both of us (husband and wife) are very happy to have found this location, booking the room was simple and Terry was a wonderful hostess. We found the room, the Garden room, to be very cozy and we loved the detailing of the vines and leaves painted throughout, our "little 'uns" enjoyed it too. The 2nd floor porch was also a nice surprise and we made sure to enjoy the room, porch and cable TV throughout our short stay. We found Terry to be very sweet and accomodating, as we had hit traffic on the way down and instead of our trip being about 2 to 3 hours, it took us 5 hours to get there, so we asked for a late check-out and being there was a vacancy, we were able to extend our stay for a few hours as well as experience another room, the Green room, which we found to be very nice. I'm not sure why some people had anything negative to say but I found the entire experience to be a positive one with the exception of someone setting off the fire alarm at 5:30am and scaring everyone, but that wasn't the owners fault, it was someone staying in another room. I thank goodness that the fire alarms are working and that nothing was wrong other than another guest being irresponsible. One funny thing though, we found ourselves literally sitting on our hands to keep from helping out more in the kitchen and cleaning the rooms, simply because it feels like you're visiting a long-lost relative rather than renting a room and we're not the type to sit idle while someone else is hosting. We never got to meet Dave, but we want to let you know how we appreciate your hospitality and look forward to visiting again. Also Dave, I notice that you address the negative reviews and am happy that you can take it and turn it into constructive criticism, but if I may give a word of advice, you have tons more positive reviews than negative, so don't take it to heart, while the concensus is that Terry should have more help to manage the house during the busy times, we understand that you make improvements and updates accordingly. We had a great time. Thank you.

Great place
Lynn in Cleaveland
My dog and I come to Cape May two or three times a year for the past 5 years. We stay at Highland House each time. Lucy and I enjoy this place. We have part of a garden we can run around without leash. Then just walk over 1 block to a park. Then we are just a couple blocks away from eating at a place called Bella Vida. The mom and son who run this place are always great with us. The only time I saw the son get upset was when a person was there with their dogs who were out of control and trying to go after other dogs. He did ask them to leave which was the appropriate thing to do. Terry and Dave are great people. They make wonderful breakfast. They let you keep your dogs in the room without supervision- which several places won't let you.

Great Place and we will be back
Arden in Vincentown
We arrived on Monday and stayed until Friday. We were treated great. We found the place very charming, and alot of work had gone into it. Everything was dog related. Yes, it did not have the modern convienes like internet, but a week to get away from that sort of stuff was pawsome. When we left it was like we were saying goodbye to family. It did not matter if it was the propritor or the people staying there. It was such a great place. Definately worth going to. One of the few places in town that allowed dogs, and allowed the owners to let them stay in the room while they went out for a bit. Though we will admit we always took our girls with us

Treats Dogs right
Bill in Reading
We are repeat customers. This place has a great price and treat your dogs right. If you are someone who wants al the modern conviences- this is not your place. If you want a place that has character and blends into the Cape May envirement- this is the place to stay. Some people called it eccentric and charming, and we can agree with that. Definately will come back again.

Great Time
Ann in NYC
We arrived there and was greated by this sweet elderly lady who checked us in. We had the ground floor that was so easy to come and go with our pets. They were so friendly with our pets. There was a great dog beach that we did spend out days at. (However make sure you bring your own water supply). We were there for our anniversary and they made a special breakfast for us on that date. We met the son and had a great evening chat with him. They both just made us feel special and boy did they make over our dog we had with us. She was in 7th heaven with him.

We went down there for a few days. The propritors were great with us. I agree that the place is a little bit excentric, but that is what made it so charming. Our room was clean. If you are coming down expecting a 4 start hotel- this is not the place for you. If your coming down wanting a place that looks charming and treat your pups like royalty- this is the place to be. This place did not charge pet fees like most of the area and the cost was wonderful. It included a great breakfast and we enjoyed our time there

We've stayed here several times over the years because the price is right and we can bring out dogs. It is true that this is not the most modern facility in Cape May, but it's clean enough and certainly affordable. Where else can you bring your dogs for no pet fee? We have never had a problem with rudeness at all. The place can be a little eccentric, but that's not a reason not to return; it's part of the character of the home. We will always consider Highland House when traveling with our pets. Other options are either farther away or, if on the beach, prohibitively pricey.

Rude and Cramped
Barbara in Syracuse
Clean, but cramped and the owners were not very nice. We stayed in the back room with an entry of its own, and a door in the room that leads to a hallway. Since it is a B&B, we dressed early the first morning there and went through the hall door to see where breakfast was being served (we smelled it cooking). Since we had used the private entry, we didn't think going through the hall would be a problem, but the guy there treated us like we were possibly going to take something and the next night and subsequent nights that hall door was locked from the other side. God forbid there was a fire and our only exit was blocked! We never ate the other breakfasts provided there. We couldn't even go into the main guest area unless we went out the private entry and around the house. It wasn't worth it. We are both working professionals, clean, neat and did nothing wrong. Our dog was well-behaved and we cleaned up after him. Other people we know had similar experiences with the owners of this place. Friendly until you're there. Needless to say, we never went back!
