No problems with Airtran

I fell in love with a dog at a pound in PA and decided to fly from WI to get her. My carrier was definitely bigger than their requirement, but they don't make carriers 17" long 8.5" high, so I decided to chance it with a Iarger carrier, and had no problems at the ticket counter or getting on the plane. (I don't think they did much more than glance at it and stick a pet tag on it.) I should mention I had bought a Delta Sherpa carrier that looks like a plain duffle bag, not a dog bag, and the dog was inside it as I got on, so no one really knew I had a dog. I think if you don't flaunt that you are traveling with one, people are less likely to give you trouble. It ended up blizzarding and the airport closed just as we taxied out to the runway to takeoff, so we went back to the gate and I ended up driving home. BUT it ended up worth the long drive, as they ended up refunding my entire trip, including the "nonrefundable" dog deposit. It was an unexpected surprise, and I would definitely fly with them again.

I always travel with airtran .I would never travel with then again I had to buy a $50 pet carrier for my dog after pay$ 130 round way for my dog being that my bag was 9in instead of 8.5 in then they used my pet as my one carry on so I had to check in my small bag.

I brought my 6lb quiet and well behaved shi-poo and at the entry of the plane a very abrupt and loud stewardess commanded that I zip my pup completely into the flight approved bag. This not only created more stress than necessary for my dog and people behind were astounded how rude and abrupt the stewardess was. I was also informed from another passenger that she saw a lady get onto another flight to L.A. with her daushaund, not only holding it by hand but without a carrier. I feel it all depends on what stewardess is on the plane. But it made for a very unpleasant flight for both of us from moline, iowa to pennsecola, florida.
Had to buy their carrier

We were recently traveling on a flight from SFO to MKE. We've had no problems with our carrier on United or American. When we arrived at check-in, the ticket agent made us buy their dog carrier for $50. After leaving the ticket counter, we put the new carrier in our carry-on and used our original carrier for the flight and the return leg without incident.
