Northwest Airlines Pet Policy

Carry-On Pet Policy:

Northwest Airlines accepts small domesticated dogs, cats and birds in the passenger cabin on all flights within the U.S. (except to Hawaii) and on flights to many international destinations. Some birds are also permitted on domestic flights. Northwest does not permit carry-on pets to destinations in Hawaii, Hong Kong, Ireland, Jamaica, Kenya, Oman, Singapore, South Africa and the United Kingdom. The maximum combined weight of your pet(s) and carrier is 15 pounds in order to travel in the cabin. For travel within the U.S., and between the U.S., Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean, a one-way fee of $100 will apply for each pet transported in the passenger cabin. International pet fees will vary depending upon the origin and final destination. Carry-on pets are not permitted in WorldBusiness Class on Northwest A330 aircraft, due to the lack of sufficient under seat storage space. This restriction does not apply to service animals, nor does it apply to WorldBusiness Class on Northwest's 747 aircraft or Economy Class on any of its aircraft. Many states and foreign countries require that pets be accompanied by a health certificate. However, Northwest Airlines does not require a health certificate for carry-on pets. Nevertheless, it is the passenger's responsibility to ensure that proper documentation is available in the event that it is requested. To avoid gate processing fees, passengers traveling with carry-on pets must inform agents at the Northwest ticketing counter at least one hour prior to departure for domestic flights and two hours prior to departure for international flights that they are traveling with a pet in the cabin.

Checked Bagage/Cargo Policy:

Dogs, cats, household birds, and other pets like rabbits, hamsters, gerbils, and guinea pigs may travel with your baggage on all U.S. domestic flights and on flights between the U.S. and Canada. On international flights, pets traveling with baggage are limited to dogs and cats only. The charge for pets traveling with baggage on domestic flights is $275 (each way). Between the U.S. and Europe, the fee is $230 (each way). International fees vary based on weight/kennel size. Check with Northwest Airlines directly to determine the exact fee for your pet. Northwest Airlines observes a summer embargo period between June and September of each year, during which time pet travel in cargo may be restricted due to extreme temperatures that are unsafe for your pets. If you are traveling during these months with pets too large to carry onboard in the cabin, it is recommended that you carefully review Northwest's website regarding its embargo policy.

Carrier Guidelines:

For the safety and comfort of your pet, please make sure your pet can fit comfortably inside its pet carrierl. The carrier must be large enough to allow your pet to move about. No part of your pet may extend outside of the carrier. For pets traveling in the passenger cabin, pet carriers must be leak proof and be ventilated on two or more sides. The maximum carrier size permitted in cabin is 17" long x 12" wide x 8" high. For pets traveling with checked baggage, pet carriers must adhere to the requirements mandated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA). For more information, visit Northwest Airline's website.

Pet Reservations:

Northwest Airlines limits each flight to six pets in the cabin - two in First or WorldBusiness Class and four in economy. On Northwest Airlink flights operated by Mesaba and Pinnacle Airlines, there is a limit of four pets per flight - two in First Class and two in economy. Therefore, it is important to reserve a ticket for yourself and your pet as soon as possible after your travel plans have been confirmed. Pets less than eight (8) weeks old are not permitted. Two pets of the same species may share a carrier if they are between three and six months old and of comparable size not weighing over 15 pounds total, including the carrier. Like all airlines, you can call Northwest to book a flight for you and your pet. However, unlike the other major airlines, Northwest allows you to reserve a spot for Fido in the cabin when you make your reservation online. Just go to www.nwa.com, make your reservation, and then click on "Manage My Reservations" to add a carry-on pet. You will then be able to pay for your pet fee online, rather than having to do so at the ticketing counter at the airport.

Good choice for carry on dogs
Heidi in Minneapolis
I fly several times a year with my small dog as a carry on. For the most part, the airline attendents are wonderful. They say hi to my dog and the best ones even turn there heads when I sneak and open the carrier so he can poke his head out. I try to always fly Northwest because of this. Most of the time they never even know my dog is on the flight.

Sad :(

I agree that the airline WAS the best for pet travel. I once loved this airline, because it was easy to fly with my dog and cheap, but now the price is out of control. I am VERY disappointed with the recent increase in price.

Sadly, the price just doubled

I agree with the previous review, that Northwest provides the best service for carry-on pets. They are always made to feel welcome. However, since the airline was acquired by Delta, the one-way fee jumped from $80 to $150. So a round-trip ticket for a 4-lb dog now costs me more than my own ticket. It'd be cheaper to buy him a seat! Absolutely ridiculous.

keep hoping

I love flying nw and have taken my "baby" (he only weighs 6 lbs.) with me in the past, but the charge has become crazy! Someone please reconsider to charge by the pound instead ! Ha,ha. What is the charge for anyway? As a carry on, I am the only one that handles this precious piece of "luggage" and he never disturbs any other passengers. So sorry it's not affordable to take my travel companion.

Overcharged

I have not flown NWA with an animal, but felt the need to warn people of what happened when I tried to book with them. I was booking from CA to FL, with 1 layover in LA and called NWA first to make sure all these flights were able to accomidate animals, I was told they were, to go ahead a book online, then call back to make my reservation for my dog. So I did exactly that, booked EVERYTHING on NWA.com, through NWA...but when I called back I was told it was American Air flying to LA then NWA from LA to FL, so to call to AA about the dog, so I did that, there fee was $100 but then the catch, because I was switching airlines it was another $100 for the NWA leg...so what they told me cost $100, was now $200...if I had booked these flights seperatly or through different companys myself it would make sense, but everything to my knowledge was through NWA, until I called them for the second time...so needless to say after speaking with management I apparenlty got a full refund, I'm still waiting for it to show that on my credit card (it's only been a few days). Never again will I book with them. I will be flying SW, even if it's not the red eye times I was hoping for...This is just a warning, even if you call first to confirm that means nothing, I guess just make sure you call right away to book your animal, if I hadn't called by midnight of the day I booked I would not have gotten a refund, I would have been subject to $150 change fee, the ticket wasn't even $150...

RIPPED OFF AGAIN
Debbie in San Diego
I've flown NWA for yrs and think it outrageous that they would double the fee one way to place your animal under the seat for the price of a ticket. I will need to find another airline that is more pet friendly.

You think the price is bad...
Lori in Las Vegas
I just had to cancel my dog's flight because he weighed 16 lbs instead of 15. They were strict on this and would not let him fly unless he was with cargo!! BS

OUTRAGEOUS!
Jaynee Smith in Swampscott, MA
I find the fee outrageous! Furthermore, when flying with Delta they count the pet as your one personal carry on item...which IS supposed to be FREE. Therefore, if you intened to carry your items you now have to check and pay for htat along with a 150 fee for your per to go onplace of your FREE carry on...TOTAL RIPOFF! Poor boyfriend at this cost he is stuck home watching the High Maintenance Princess!

fee outrageously high
mary in minneapolis mn
March 8, 2009. $300 charge for tucking a extra bag under the seat in front of me?? This is really outrageous. As a 100% loyal customer to Northwest for the past 20 years, I find this recent increase from $160 to $300 really taking advantage of pet owners who wish to travel with their pets.
