Entry Requirements

Complete the following entry requirements to travel to El Salvador with your pet:
  • El Salvador is a high risk country for rabies. Before receiving an import permit to return to the U.S., travelers must obtain 2 pictures of their pet's front teeth, a CDC Rabies Vaccination and Microchip Record, a serologic titer from an approved laboratory and a passport photo of the owner. Once these items are obtained, apply for a permit for your pet to return to the U.S. at this link. For further guidance on returning to the U.S. with your pet from a high risk country, contact the CDC directly at cdcanimalimports@cdc.gov
  • Travelers with dogs or cats traveling must have an import permit issued by the General Direction of Plant and Animal Health, Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock of El Salvador, which can be obtained prior to travel or upon arrival, and a quarantine permit from the port of entry in El Salvador.
  • Pets also require a health certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian, including a rabies vaccination certificate and a duplicate.

Quarantine Information

Pets being transported into El Salvador are not required to be quarantined if they meet all the necessary requirements listed above.
