    Mount Mitchell State Park

    Nestled in the Black Mountains, Mount Mitchell State Park in Burnsville, NC, provides nearly 2,000 acres of tranquility and natural beauty for you to enjoy with Fido by your side. At an elevation of 6,684, Mount Mitchell rises above the surrounding landscape and, as the highest point east of the Mississippi, provides stunning, one-of-a-kind views of the Blue Ridge Mountains from the summit. You and your pup can enjoy a picnic before setting off on a short stroll or a more extensive hike through the forests of Mount Mitchell. Pets must be on a leash no longer than 6 feet at all times and may never be left unattended. They are not permitted in any park buildings, rental boats, swimming beaches, rinsing stations, changing stations, or cabins. Visit Website

      Breathtaking Views

      Dogs are welcomed on all the trails but not inside any of the buildings. There were many people there with their pups enjoying the sun and the scenery. There is a snack bar and gift shop. There is also a restaurant on the way in, but it wasn't open (it was July so maybe it's only a weekend thing). We enjoyed the drive out and the short hike to the peak.

      I’m on top of the world!

      The dogs loved this location. The short hike from the parking lot to the peak was pleasant and easy. There are many more longer side trails but we had already hiked a bunch and decided to keep it short. There was a cafe, a shop, a museum, and restrooms too which made this stop extra nice. Had a cup of hot cider on a cold day and the staff loved the dogs.

      There were easy trails for little dogs and plenty of great photo spots along the way.

      favorite park

      Love my Mitchell and the views. Several trails that my dog enjoys and there is a restaurant as well.
