  Wonderful area in Newport

  We were able to enjoy the guided tour with our Barney. he wasn’t restricted from any of the areas. The beautiful view and extensive green space was an added bonus.

  Great day!

  We found out about Fort Adams State Park on this website and I'm so happy we did!
  We were looking for a place that the whole family (2 adults, 4 kids, and 1 9-month old Golden Retriever) could enjoy together. Fort Adams had it all: great views, a wonderful (flat) walking path, concessions and clean restrooms , and, of course, a great tour of a historical landmark we were unaware of prior to our visit!
  It was a hot day for our Golden but the pace of the tour allowed her to stroll leisurely and take frequent drinks from her water bottle. As others have said, this is not a "dog park" so we made sure to keep her toward the back of the tour group. The staff and others in the tour group were very welcoming. It was a highlight of our week in Rhode Island!

  Excellent!

  What a great place for Fido! Plenty of open space (there are signs that say $100 fine for dogs off leash, but many dogs were off the leash running around). We walked the grounds before finding the visitor center which is tucked away all the way past the sailing school where you think you’re driving to nowhere! Beautiful views from all over the grounds. We were so happy to find out that Sarge was allowed to join us on our tour of the fort. The tour is definitely worth while! They take you inside the fort, through the living quarters, up on the roof, and even down on the tunnels. And dogs are allowed through the whole tour! It was great to be able to learn about the history of the fort all while tiring out our very energetic pup! A great time was had by all! Highly recommended!!

  Greg M. was our tour guide and I have to say, he was fantastic! He had so much information and his delivery was interesting and engaging! The tour was just over an hour but the time flew by because of all the information Greg shared with us. Don't miss this wonderful presentation and a chance to get in touch with your heritage!

  A LIFESAVER for my dog!

  I cannot say enough how much we have enjoyed this park over the last week. We're in Newport on our boat for a month and my dog was, to say the least, less than thrilled with the boat AND the hustle & bustle of Newport. This park has saved her (and my) sanity. When you drive into the entrance, follow the signs toward the Eisenhower House and you'll head right into a huge parking area in the middle of about 50 acres of manicured lawn. To be clear, dogs are permitted on leash everywhere in the park. But to be honest, almost everyone unleashes for a little ball-playing. If you break the rules & take off the leash, please be careful & considerate. Poopie bags are provided in several locations, but I was tempted to knock off one bone for the fact that the entire park has NOT ONE trash can, not even in the rest room. State cost-cutting measure, so be prepared to take your bags with you.
  This park has more places to walk & explore than you could ever do in a day or two. We've been going every morning & it's so refreshingly quiet & UN-Newport that my poor, over-stimulated country dog has finally re-learned to smile. :)
  There's a small beach near the beginning of the marina & if you get there early in the day before there are lots of people you might be able to sneak in a little swim for you and your pooch. Again, it's supposed to be on-leash only, so be watchful & considerate.
  Lots of picnic areas off the beaten path offer plenty of ball or frisbee-playing opportunities and they have many grills available if you want to bring charcoal & lunch.
  There's a water fountain in front of the restrooms if you need to refill a bottle or bowl.
  Speaking of the restrooms they're only open seasonally, and frankly the ladies room was absolutely filthy. Oddly, the toilets were sparklingly clean but the floor was puddled with water & littered with trash. A simple wastebasket might help resolve this, but it appeared as though the ladies room suffers from a serious case of "not-my-job syndrome". I popped into the men's room for a peek & it was significantly cleaner.
  There are rest rooms & coin-op showers near the beach, too. The ladies room was cleaner here.
  The park offers paid tours but I don't know the price or timing.
  The park rangers patrol regularly so we always kept an eye out when we were breaking the law (off leash!) ;) and made it without reprimand. I don't really know if the rangers are also the leash police but I suspect they are.
  Newport has lots of parks, but I haven't found anywhere this big or this quiet where my dog could totally unwind & relax.
  Since this is not a dog park & in order to keep it available for everyone to use so freely, we were extra cautious about being clean, conscientious, and staying away from others. There's plenty of room for everyone to enjoy. I can't recommend highly enough.
