Great Hike in December in the afternoon!
First, you need to park on Mesquite Ave. by the stop signs (This is the North end of the trail). You can not park in the Tahquitz Canyon park and visitor centre parking lot. The trailhead is right at the end of Mesquite Ave, with a map, garbage cans and doggy bags to pick up after your dog. Dogs must be leashed, and really it's for their safety, snakes and all those nice critters living off the trail. Plus if we keep our dogs on leash perhaps we can keep the trail open to the dogs...It is 1.5 miles to the highest point of this hike (there are picnic tables) we went just a bit past this thinking it would go to the top of the mountain, it does not it starts going back down, we turned back as we initially did not realize you can do a whole 3.5+ miles and it spits you out at South Palm Canyon Drive (b/w Murray canyon dr and Bogert trail, you would likely need a shuttle car or double the distance and go back via trail or streets). The really nice thing is we arrived in PS at about noon and it was 28C (82F) so I was a bit worried about our dog who is a Canadian mountain dog and not a huge fan of hot summer days. Not to worry in December this trail is entirely in the shade at 2:30 pm (if not earlier) the sun starts to drop which decreases the heat a lot on the trail. I would guess NOT a great mid-morning hike. Still, make sure to bring water. Its a significant uphill for the 1.5miles. We will likely try it from the other (south) side tomorrow.
