    NJ beaches sucks for Dogs

I can't believe this state is so unfriendly to the dogs. So many beaches are inundated with strict rules for dogs. Additionally the designated dogs parks are restricted with same or very unwelcoming rules. If a beach is designate as a dog beach, let the dog owners have a place to take their pets just to do that without so many restrictions. Most of the dogs needs a place to run and they love to run on the beach. Asbury dog beach is a joke.

    what's the point?

Why have a designated dog beach with same rules as 95% of other beaches along NJ coast regarding dogs? It's ridiculous that you can't bring your dog to the dog beach from 8:30-6pm. Isn't there enough beach in NJ for people to use where pets are not allowed? Does Asbury Park NJ feel that they will lose money on that small section of beach if they don't close it to pets during the day. If so, charge $5 for dog owners to off set the fee. It is an embarrassing disgrace really...sign, sign, everywhere a sign in NJ unfortunately. Not proud to live here because of these things. What a wasted trip with our dog today as far as Asbury Park goes...but Fisherman's cove in Manasquan was A-Okay as a second option some 9 miles away. Shame on you Asbury Park...rethink this rule and make the dog beach a dog beach!!!!!!!!!!!1

    Asbury Park Dog Beach

Awesome! Went the week before Memorial Day. There are parts that you can not be on. So make sure you are in the right place. There is a senior living high rise right across from the dog beach. Bring your leash, poop bags, a golf or beach umbrella and plenty of water if you plan to stay for awhile. Others were playing ball, some were on the waterfront but too cold to go any further in May. Restrooms right there and off the boardwalk is the plastic walkway to help you cross the sand. I do not think dogs are allowed on the boardwalk though. Loved it. Clean beach.

    So fun!

I traveled from MA to see Asbury Park with my pup. He absolutely loved the beach! Everyone was so nice and so many friendly dogs. I was able to let my dog off leash to play ball and had no issues! Highly recommend!

Can not swim with your dog. Not really dog friendly in tourist season memorial day to labor day

    Dogs not permitted here

What’s the point of being dog friendly when it’s not during the day?

This beach is for the dogs

The 8th Ave dog beach is great. Surf, sand and a dogs… what else could you ask for? Asbury is the most dog friendly town in NJ, with a welcoming attitude toward any well behaved dog. There is the Wonder Bars “Yappy hour” and a few restaurants that offer a dog menu so you fur-friend can join you for an outdoor meal. We recommend it all!

    Great dog beach.

Great dog beach. Restrooms and water source is right by entrance to the beach. This beach does have a history of some unleashed dogs that should be leashed. Be cautious until you get a sense of the current dogs during your visit.

    Great Spot

Best dog friendly beach I've been to in NJ, of which there are surprisingly few. Busy in a good way. Not packed to the point of discomfort as it is very large.

Interactions with other owners have been very positive, and any dogs I've run in to who have behavioral problems have been appropriately minded and corrected.

Even my partner's dog who is selectively social and so needs to be muzzled and closely minded (just in case, he's usually fine) has been well received even though the muzzle sometimes scare others elsewhere.

    11/10 great 👍

    The Beach is Open!

May 22, 2020 from their Facebook Page:
The Eighth Avenue Dog Beach is technically open but the entrance to the Dog Beach at Deal Lake Drive is temporarily closed starting May 16, 2020 due to construction of the north end. We expect construction to be finished by mid-summer. During that time, dog owners may use the entrance at the very north end of Asbury Park beach at the border of Loch Arbour and walk down to the Eighth Avenue Dog Beach. Please note, dogs are not permitted on beaches other than the Eighth Avenue Dog Beach or on the Boardwalk per City Ordinance.

Dogs that are licensed and supervised are allowed on the Eighth Avenue Dog Beach from May 16 to September 14 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 a.m. only. Dogs must be off the beach by 8:30 a.m. Dogs may be off leash on the Eight Avenue Dog Beach if properly supervised. Dogs that become aggressive or uncontrollable must be immediately leashed and removed from the area. Dog handlers must always and immediately clean up after their dogs.

Dogs are not permitted on beaches other than the Eighth Avenue Dog Beach.

Dogs are not permitted on the Boardwalk from May 16 to September 14.

    Best Dog Beach In NJ!

Didn't know Asbury Park was so dog friendly! This is by far the best beach you can bring your dog to. It's clean and your dog will have a blast! Only thing is it can get pretty full on some summer afternoons but not that big of a deal

    Happy dogs!

Took our rescue to beach first time yesterday, and I never saw her so happy before! She is usually very reserved and timid, but was running, rolling in sand, playing with other dogs and had a lot of fun. It's great to see so many dogs and all of them were friendly and playful. Beach is clean, both sand and water and we had no problem finding parking at 5 pm, eating in one of local dog-friendly restaurants first. I wish this place was open all day though.

    Dog Heaven

I rescued my dog a year and a half ago and was looking for a nice dog beach that wasn’t too far to drive. This is perfect. It’s a beautiful beach. My dog had a blast running around. Tough I don’t think he’s ever seen the ocean before so he was afraid of the waves and stayed on the sand.

Not giving 5 stars because some basic amenities are needed. They do have a shower to rinse off but a restroom and some closet food / water would be good

    Most fabulous place!

I only have the best things to say about this dog beach. I go every weekend & more if possible. I have NEVER had a problem with anybody not wanting their dog to play with mine, unless the person who reviewed this past May. Not certain where they were, but it couldn't have been here. We walk, we run, we play, we talk, we swim...& the dogs are happier than you could imagine. As am I! The beach is kept clean, although its unavoidable that a few lazy people don't clean up after their dog. They even provide doggie bags which shouldn't be their expense. I do wish during the off season that they kept trash cans on the beach....even just 1, but there is always the can at the beginning of the beach near the lot. I find the people who come to be a wonderful diverse group of people, young & old. All types & ages of dogs as well. Just happiness everywhere. The only thing I ask is that whomever decides to come, that they clean up after their dog so that things don't change here. Its a wonderful & rare opportunity in NJ to have a dog beach & I'd hate to see things change. I think it is PERFECT & love it! Thank you Asbury Park!

    Stuck up Owners!

Here’s a little review of Asbury Park: the owners there SUCK! Not one of them let their dog play with another dog even when my dog ran up trying to get another dog to play. One dog owner literally told me to come get my dog, called her aggressive, and said I shouldn’t of brought her here. Mind that, my dog was not biting, growling, or showing any aggressive behavior towards this other dog! And it wasn’t just my dog they wouldn’t let their dog play with, it was every dog! NJ dog parks are nothing like PA. We let our dogs rough house (to an extent) but it’s like these people don’t believe in dog socialization! Maybe some others have had a really good experience but ours was really bad... I don’t recommend going to the Asbury Park dog park unless you bring your dog a friend to play with.

    All around great time!

Took our two dogs to the beach for the first time. Was a little unsure as to what to expect. Turned OUT GREAT!! I have already recommend to all my friends and family who have well behaved off leash dogs. Boardwalk was also very dog friendly as were the restaurants.

    Great experience!!

We went during the off season and had a great experience! Lots of friendly dogs and dog owners, lots of space for our dog to run and play. We also went on the boardwalk and ate dinner with our dog at one of the restaurants. We will definitely be going back!!

    Saturday before Halloween

If you are going to go during the off season, this is the day to come. Lots of people and dogs yet plenty of parking. The beach is great. Public works had pushed back some of the beach, I'm guessing to protect the sand from the winter storms. This created these huge dunes that the dogs just loved running up and down. The board walk at 8th street is dead, but from the convention center South it was happening. Especially dog friendly places to eat. Around 3-3:30 there was a parade of dogs in costume.

    We had an Amazing Day!!

Luther, a black lab rescue, had never been to the beach so the sand bar was great to experience waves and water for the first time. The beach was nice if we wanted to hang out in the sand, but most of the time was spent in the water. All the dogs were friendly and well behaved and there were tons of dogs!! Most dogs, like Luther, were off leash but a few stayed on leash. After the beach we walked on the boardwalk and ended the day at Wonder Bar to play in the kiddie pools with more dogs! We will definitely be back!!

Nice Beach but pay attention to HOURS

My boyfriend and I visited the beach in Jun with my puppy at 10:30am. Unknown to us that dogs can only be on the beach before 8am and after 5 pm (on weekdays) or 6pm (on weekends). We didn't get a chance to actually go on the beach but it looked really clean and not crowded. Next time I will go at those times. We drove about an 1 and 15 minutes but Milo had fun on the Boardwark meeting other dogs anyway. There were a lot of dogs on the boardwalk... maybe things have changed after Sandy because there is really nothing but a boardwalk, port a potty's and one food truck.

    neighboring buildin

Living dirctly across from dog beach has pros and cons, Ive yet to leave my shelter rescue off lease to enjoy the freedom since I dont know whether he will listen and he is one of those little crazy barking dogs and it doesnt matter how big the other dog is Im not sure if he will sill be agressive. But there is nothin more heart warming then to watch my nighbors golden "cinnamin" jump the waves and just smile when she is at her beach. We in Asbury Tower love seeing the dogs run and play out of our window and front patio even though some mornings we are woke up wit barks of happiness from all the four leged visitor an also some noise by the wo lgged ones. Keep coming n gve your dog time to smile

    love this place

I have been to the dog beach in Asbury and absolutely love it. I'm sad we can't take the dogs on the boardwalk anymore because it was fun looking at the ocean and enjoying nature with my dogs. I am still confused about the hours but I'm going there after 6 pm tonight and it's June 2012. I hope we don't get kicked off. Regardless, I still think this is a great place to bring your dogs.....

    Dog owner

I have to well trained dogs who are always on leash when at parks and in public. I also ALWAYs clean up after my dogs. I rotate and go to different dog friendly parks/places and am disgusted at other dog owners. We share these places that each town is nice enough to make dog friendly and many owners are disrespectful by not leaching their dog and by not cleaning up after them. I am a dog owner and it sickens me when I go home frequently with another dogs poop on my shoes......imagine what a non-dog owner thinks!! PLEASE be respectful of others and clean up and leash. I am really sick of my dogs being attacked by unleashed dogs......no wonder the French hate us!!

Love It, but there is one negative......

I come here all the time! I run and play with my dog. It's my happy place. I have never been bothered by anyone restricting me in anyway. Although I am respectful. I clean up after my dog. I leash my male Pitbull if I feel like he may want to check out the ladies up ahead and when no one is around we play catch with leash off! I never restrict myself to the dog park. I go where ever as long as I don't interfere with others no one seems to give a hoot. The only thing that sucks is the people who have the aggressive, annoying, little barking dogs that of coarse are NEVER leashed. The little dogs have a complex and go after my Pit bull who can eat them as a tasty snack...but never does. These dog owners unfortunately feel like because there dog is small they do not have to leash them despite the fact that there dog is going after mine. They also NEVER attempt to control their dog when they bombard us. They leave it up to me to wrestle my dog off their dog. It is an attempt on my part to stop their dog from being violated, or crushed and trampled. My dog knows better and does not seek out other dogs and challenge them. If something unfortunate did happen like a little aggressive dog got hurt by my dog trying to defend against the attack or get away from the attacking dog, everyone knows that it would automatically be the Pitbull's fault. No matter what happened! So please do everyone a favor, just use a leash when you need to. It's the little nasty dogs that really have no business there anyway because they are aggressive! It ruins MY experience. I did not go to the beach to be harassed, hurt, or have my dog taken from me cause other people are inconsiderate or a Benny saw the dog park and was unprepared with no leash but let there aggressive dog on anyway. I go for peace of mind, a run and play with my well behaved dog. I go to great lengths to make sure my dog does not bother, annoy, or attack any other person or dog. If you can't control your dog PLEASE leash them. Bring a bag and clean up your dogs poop. Be prepared or don't come. If you can't be considerate and safe then don't come and ruin it for everyone else.

Free dog beach, does anything beat that?

As of summer 2011-- To clarify other people's posts, this dog beach is free during the off-hours which is the only time I go during the summer anyway (before 9 AM). Also, the Asbury Park boardwalk itself does not allow dogs anymore, but that's a few blocks over, not directly next to the dog beach, and you can always walk with your dog (leashed) on the street parallel to it, along with all the other dog owners.

Free parking, nice people & dogs

There aren't too many cheap places left on the Jersey Shore for humans or dogs, but this little gem of a beach is home to friendly humans and playful pups. There is a potholed free parking lot at the north end of Asbury Park and a nearby shower on the boardwalk, but it is beyond the "no dogs allowed" sign. There are also plenty of trash cans to help you clean up after your pet.

Cinched the deal - we bought a house in Asbury because of this beach

We have been looking at all different beach communities from Long Island to the Jersy Shore to buy a house. We came to AP to check it out for the weekend. Whomever is marketing AP is doing a great job. This is definitely the most dog friendly place I have ever been. There is the Wonder bar "yappy hour
" - dog treats at various restaurants on the boardwalk...and then the best of the best - the dog beach....it is great and wonderful to have a place for your poohes to run and play...this cinched the deal for us. We took our dogs to the beach on a Sunday in early May, a fantastic time was had by all four of us. We then put an offer on a house that week and it has been accepted. DOG BEACH YOU SEALED THE DEAL. I understand there is some talk of building condos on that beach-----who ever is listening, do not let that happen. This makes AP unique and sets the tone for the lifewtyle and tolerance in the revitalization effort. Keep cool, keep the beach clean and let's enjoy this wonderful asset!

    Great Dog Beach

Love it! And the dogs love it! The dogs and the owners are really nice. Go for a while and you'll meet the regulars. Would love to know when the summer hours change...is it actually Labor Day or October as it is in O.G.?

    Stick to the Facts

This beach is fantastic for Dog owners. Asbury has been very welcoming to pets. During the off season, pets unleashed on all parts of the beach. They are accommodating Dog owners by allowing a dog beach at the far end, near Lake Deal. I have had nothing but good experiences on the beach regularly. During the Season, restricted between 9 am to 5 pm. This is understandable with all of the beach goers at this time. But very thankful there is beach access for the pup to enjoy!!! Please respect all guidelines when visiting. Let's not make the authority think twice about allowing this dog beach.

    Rate the beach

Wendy and Chris, are you guy serious? Giving this place a bad rating for reasons that don't even apply. Newsflash, this spot is a dog beach, not a dog boardwalk. A hair salon all the way across the state also does not count as this dog beach. Unbelievable.

This is what you were looking for

Asbury Park (Bravo!) has made a big commitment to dog owners with an official dog beach allowing off leash dogs on the nice ocean beach. Pay attention to the hours the beach is open for pets. During the summer until labor day until 9 am and after 5 pm. After Labor Day DOG BEACH PARTY! NO restrictions and NO leash. PLEASE WATCH YOUR DOG AND PICK UP WASTE!!! even if its not your dog's waste. People swim and surf this beach. And if you have an aggressive dog (as in agggressive with other dogs or people), please get a trainer and do not bring him to this or any other dog run.

Where is it? Extreme northen edge of Asbury Park north of the signs saying surfers only and north of the retirement home. Careful parking! it is like a moonscape of craters in the dirt lot behind the beach.
