Nice pair of dog parks to let our dog unwind after a full day of traveling.

The Athens East State dog park was a good place, where friendly people gathered, tried to keep the place clean, even patched mudholes. I know of individuals (including yours truly) who spent hours sodding muddy places. Then the city of Athens and Petsmart entered the picture, tearing up the turf, leaving huge ruts and holes, destroying much of the grass--all in the name of erecting a small shelter that gives virtually no shade and has two metal "benches" (no back) so hard you couldn't stand sitting there for more than two minutes. I have talked to dozens of dog park users, and all are dismayed by what has happened. The entire project was ill conceived and carelessly implemented. The only way it could be corrected is by closing the park for weeks in the spring, filling in ruts and mud holes, bringing in sod, and seeding large areas. Even then, it is doubtful the place will return to its former "okay" condition.
As one park goer noted, "It's unbelievable what a waste of money and what poor planning went into this project." The roof of the shelter is so high, it might give 30 minutes of shade at high noon. The location of the shelter right by the entrance tore up some prime grass, as if the shelter couldn't have been located where people would have to walk a little bit (but we certainly wouldn't want any recreation in a recreation facility). An acquaintance of mine quickly alerted me to the discomfort of the seats on two tiny benches: it's as if planners went out of their way to make things dysfunctional. Believe me, I haven't heard anyone (who uses the park) say one good thing about what has happened.

Love it! Has a few agility course obstacles and trees, lots of open mowed grass for fetch, and a few benches. Small problem with mud sometimes, but overall an excellent park!
