    Good but a few issues

Really a nice big space but be aware there are burrs and thorns that can get into paws. We pulled 2 out of our Golden Retriever’s paws. The area is large with plenty of room for a dog to romp. After rain it is muddy. Overall a good time

    Single Use Option

Loved the single use option! our dogs are not regular visitors to dog parks so it was great to just have a huge space to themselves in our road trip. While we had to wait about 15 min, the other user saw us and exited within the time frame for single use. There were people waiting to use after us so the pus got a quick run and potty use and we’re out in 15 min too. I will look for more single use parks.

    Single use parks are amazing!

we are traveling from Texas and wanted to find somewhere to let our English setters stretch their legs.

because my young setter has a very forward, rude play style I was so thrilled to see this and talk to a fellow dog trainer in the area that suggested to try this dog park.

the single use parks are AMAZING! they are big and two of them have brush to run through. our dogs absolutely love it.

we will go every day we are here!!!

    Ugh

We are from the upper Midwest. We are doing a road trip.
Within the first 5 minutes of visiting this beautiful park my male pup was so full of cactus that I had to carry him out.
He had cactus all around his neck and in his pads. I did my best to remove what I could.
I could not get the cactus out of his pads without him trying to bite me out of his pain.
We see the shelter/animal hospital in the short distance and quickly zoomed up to the hospital.
The staff met me at my vehicle and said they are closed and wasn’t willing to help.
they wrote down an emergency vet. that might be open.
So, we will not go back.

it looks like a lovely place and I guess it’s expected that my pups will get access to cactus in the dog park.

    Fantastic park with friendly folk

My dog Brighe loved this park, and especially socializing with people who might have had beef jerky in their pockets. Everyone was all too glad to pet my old gal, and the weather was perfect with some breeze and cloud cover. Great loop to walk with your “big” dogs. Definitely take the slight detour on your way through, your dog will love it here.

Also as a side note, the nearby shelter is pretty great too. Very clean with awesome staff.

    largest dog park ever!

This is a fantastic venue. Huge (must be 20-30 acres) off leash area for large dogs and separate facility for smaller. Separate solo areas for dogs with 30 minute limit for isolated play.

    Great dog park

Lots of variety in places to take your pups. Especially liked that there was an area dedicated for small dogs. There was even a sign on the front gate showing the height your dog needed to be under in order to go in the area (although a couple of people did not heed to it).

Be aware that there is no grass in the fenced in areas and your dogs will get rather dirty if they play ball or run around a lot. And, as others have said, there are a few small cactus within the enclosures.

HUGE lots! Plain but lots of room...

I'm reviewing the dog park, not the shelter itself.

HUGEEEEEE! Plenty of room for all the dogs in the state! Not really but you know what I mean. They have a separate lot for large dogs and small dogs as well as single-users. Single users are for one family at a time in case the dog isn't that good with other dogs but need space to run and play.

Has doggy bags for use if needed as well as a bench or two in each public lots. Water spigots are available in certain lots but seems to be off for winter season.

Plenty of parking! Didn't notice a people bathroom because I didn't need it. But I'm sure the shelter would let you use theirs if needed.

One star down because of two things...

While I love how big the park is, it's just a lot. No agility course or elements to play with. It's not a horrible thing to miss out on but parks with these elements have really set the bar high for me. :)

And it can be DUSTY! Dust kept blowing and getting kicked up and my dog got an eye infection from it. It's New Mexico though so not sure how the shelter could help prevent this.

Nevertheless, GREAT for those who are traveling with pups.

    Great Park!

I lived in Santa Fe a couple years ago, and my dog and I came here almost every weekend. He loved running around with the other dogs, and I loved knowing that he was safely fenced in. All of the owners were very nice; we usually walked around the trail as a group while our dogs played. Like other people have said, you should definitely bring tweezers! My dog's playmate got a little overzealous once and knocked my pup right onto a cactus. Also, make sure to bring water in the winter, because the spigots are locked.

    beware cactus thorns

Large, well fenced, definitely issues with cactus thorns , not a place to throw balls and have your dog chase them, recommend staying on the trails, Goggle maps did not locate this well!

    Doesn't Get Better!

I'm traveling across the USA with my two large dogs. We visit lots and lots of dog parks. This is one of the best I've come across because of its size (lots of trails - easy to spread out from others). The people were all friendly (most dog people are great!) and there was water on site for the dogs to drink. The location is easy to find (just a little further down the road than my GPS told me to go) and parking is a breeze. Highly recommend this park to travelers!

    Very Peaceful

We took our dog here back last September 2012 and Georgie loved it. It is very big and there is like a trail you can walk on while your pup runs around. If I ever get to go back to this city I would go here again with my dog.

    Excersize with a view!

These dog parks have something I hadn't encountered before - "single user" areas that were as big as my whole dog park back home that were for people who didn't want their dogs to play with others. Only one was marked this way so we ended up wandering into another one during someone's private play time. They kindly directed us across the street to the community park and we had a blast! We had the fortune of being at the park while The Dog Lady came through with all of the animals she was boarding and our puppy got a lot of play time with other dogs. The views were astounding, the park was much cleaner than my park back home, and it was worth the several hour drive to enjoy the weekend up in Santa Fe just for this park alone!

    Wonderful Park!

But watch out for the Poodle Parties. The owners bring human food and have a nice meeting inside the large park at the main entrance. Big sign out front, NO FOOD, only training treats. Drives the non participant dogs crazy. They also block the enterance, so entering and leaving is very tough.

The park is a wonderful asset to the community. We enjoy our time there, and the 45min drive is worth it.

    It's HUGE

My dogs and I have been back in Santa Fe for 3 months but today was our first visit to this park. It's huge, someone told me it's about a mile around the perimeter. There are also 4 seperated areas across the "road" that are used "privately" (anyone can use them) for dogs who aren't as well socialized and need a smaller group or for small dogs. The park is relatively clean and has lots of little trails and shaded areas with benches for the humans. The people there were friendly and the dogs we met were all well behaved. The biggest advantage this park has over the only other dog park in Santa Fe is that it is entirely fenced! It has a nice high wire fence. The Ortiz dog park is NOT fenced, so I can't take my Pyr there or I would never find him again LOL. Drawbacks- The map on my iPhone had incorrect directions to the park, showing that I should drive past the animal shelter, the park is actually right next to the shelter. The only potty stations I saw were right inside the gate so I then had to tote around my Pyr's poop bag with me (stinky). Also, for traveling doggies who are not used to cactus... beware. Just like any place else in Santa Fe, there are CACTUS!!! And some of them are small and very low profile so difficult to see, especially to an excited canine. My advice, bring tweezers or hemostats to pick out cactus and keep on top of it! I checked my dogs several times and ended up pulling out a lot of cactus (they're Dallas dogs, never seen a cactus before moving here) with my bare hands. Be sure to check between toes and even around the face (my Border Collie X had one in the roof of his mouth). Even with the cactus we'll be going back soon, armed with a pair of hemostats (which I'm pretty sure you can buy in any drug store, I saw some in the Santa Fe Petsmart-Rodeo Rd and Zafarano Rd-the other day).
