Coronado Dog Beach

Coronado's Dog Beach is a dog-friendly, leash-free area on the western part of the shore in Coronado, CA. Parking is available along Ocean Boulevard, but it can be a rather long walk to the beach, so be sure to keep your pup leashed until you reach the sand, as there is a strict zero-tolerance policy for unleashed dogs. Owners are asked to monitor their dogs at all times, clean up any messes and ensure that Fido has all current licenses before visiting. Make sure to bring a camera and snap some photos of Fido with the stunning scenery! The Point Loma headland and iconic Hotel del Coronado are visible from the shore. Visit Website

This is THE San Diego Dog Beach to Visit

For YEARS... decades even... I have been going to the 'other dog beach' and WHY?!? How did I not know about this amazing slice of heaven? Parking is a bit dicey on holiday weekends and such but if you are willing to walk (and it is good for you!) this place is great. Not too crowded, on the section open to unleashed dogs which is to your right as you are walking towards the ocean it is like doggy heaven but in the sand! The humans seem to pick up after their dogs much better than the other dog beach (score!) and there just seems to be more of a chill vibe with dogs and people alike here. I loved that they had the doggy washing station as you leave the area as well. This is my new go to, when my girls and I are back visiting our hometown from the desert.

    Very nice beach, great views

This is a huge beach with a great view of Coronado and Point Loma. Lots of room for dogs to play. We also really enjoyed watching the fighter jets take off and land right over us at the navy base next to the beach.

    Smaller, but epic

Fantastic location, gorgeous views, sparkling fools gold in the sand. Smaller than another local dog beach in SD county, but shouldn't be missed. No shade - bring an umbrella. Water fountain and hose on site. Restroom slightly up the sidewalk away from dog area. Parking can be tough, but manageable.

    Great experience for my puppy

what a good experience for my puppy. it’s his first time playing with other dogs at the beach off leashed. i was hesitant at first but most of the dogs and the dog owners are nice and very responsible and knows the temperament of their own dogs. what a great day to see my 6 month old puppy play with big dogs

    Six Bones Great

lovely, accessible (even for my 94 year old Mom in a wheelchair) and super fun for our 10 month Golden Retriever. highly, highly recommend! there’s even a hose to wash off all the sand from playing in the surf.

Best Dog Beach in San Diego County

Love to drive the RV to the Silver Strand on Coronado Island and spend a couple of days...especially enjoying the chance to let Duke run on the dog beach. Lots of room and I've never seen a problem. Worth the drive!

    Favorite Beach!

I’ve been to a few dog beaches, but this one is my favorite! soft sand, beautiful views, and unbelievable sunsets. Coronado dog beach is equally fun dogs and their owners!

    Lots of room to play!

We love this beach. It is fenced on the base side and open on the other. There is a "trench" type of the thing that separates the dog beach from the regular beach. It is so large and there is plenty of space to play. Highly recommend!

    Super soft sand

This beach is huge and has super soft sand! You must keep the dogs on a leash until you reach the designated dog beach area, then let them loose! It's huge, has gentle waves, very friendly people, clean... very nice! There isn't a restroom at the dog beach, technically, but there is one in the absolutely no dog area just 50 feet away. The water station with a hose is a fantastic bonus because the sand is pretty deep and loose going into and coming out of the area. The beach is also blocked off in the Navy side so fido is safe from running off. We will definitely return!

    Best weekend outing

This beach is by far one of the bests in California. Roadie, my dog, loves starting the weekend off by running and swimming at this beach. Everything is clean and spacious. Only problem are some people do not like dogs playing with their dogs. Keep an eye on your little one and read people’s reactions to make sure you keep your dog from bothering other people.

    Best Dog Beach

    Love this dog beach! We’ve
been coming here for over 20 years. Very clean! If I had to say something negative it would just be there’s no bathroom.

Great Dog Beach made for Merry Christmas!

We visited Coronado last year without our dog and this year we decided to return with our fur baby. With Coronado Dog beach on on the top of our to visit list. It was great! Very Clean which I am finding quite rare on our trip thus far, with the clean up hose and water fountain at the entrance. Plus garbage and poop bags available for those who forgot or ran out. People and dogs were really friendly, all sorts of dogs. My dog is more into chasing his ball but found a couple dogs to play with. Didn't see any problems between dogs while we were there. Will happily be going again.

We bring our dog here on the regular. We also have a toddler and bring her along. Absolutely best dog beach we have been to.

Wonderful beach minus irresponsible dog owners

We are visiting from IL and this is the first time we took our rescue pup to a beach. We're still training him so opted to keep him on leash. The beach is clean with plenty of garbages and baggies for clean up. There's plenty of room for everyone.

However, as we were walking to the far end of the beach toward the naval base, a Doberman decided to follow us. His owner called "play nice" after he started to get aggressive, trying to mount my dog and bite his face and side, but the dog didn't listen to his owner. I tried to shoo him off and we kept walking. Twice more the Doberman came back and scared my pup enough for him to get out of his harness and run away yipping which he's never done before. I chased them and separated the dogs myself. The other owner eventually apologized but I was livid. Luckily we had no injuries but if your dog is not under voice CONTROL then be respectful enough to keep him/her on leash for other people/dogs' safety!

At the less crowded end of the beach, everything was much more pleasant and I'd come back at a less busy time next time we're in town.

    So much fun!!!

Took Brizo today - first time at a beach, and first time off leash. Big day!! She did awesome and we both had so much fun. Great beach - no dog poop - water hose for afterward - everybody was very friendly. Highly recommend. I could have stayed forever, but my husband was bored - ha!! Do obey the signs for the section (to the left when you arrive) which doesn't allow any dogs - i hear they ticket, but it's fairly well marked if you're paying attention.

    Best Dog Beach

Having been to all the dog beaches in the San Diego area, I would rate this as #1. The beach is clean and offers a dog water fountain at the entrance.

    Try To Share

Coronado dog beach is, by far, the most beautiful and well kept area for off-leash water fun for the dogs. But, I run into many dog owners who don't like to share play time. They get upset if another dog wants to play with their dogs and their balls. To see such angry, selfish people so early in the day makes the visit unpleasant. Dogs play unconditionally and are not selfish. I always allow other dogs to play with my dog's ball and join in the fun. If you want to be that rude & selfish please go somewhere else or stay in your backyard! This beach is so nice and pleasant without jerks who get mad if my dog runs after your ball!

    Good Times

This was our dog's first trip to an ocean dog beach and it was great. There is a large area for dogs to play in the sand and ocean. Lots of friendly people and dogs. I highly recommend this place. I know we'll be back.

Great Beach but watch for irresponsible people

We love going to this beach - great views, sand, surf and large place for dogs to romp (on or off leash). Pluses are the hose and grass at the entrance. Most people are conscientious and pay attention to their dog(s) behavior and location but there are some who let their dogs run free without monitoring, like on the afternoon of 9/10/10. A lady brought her 2 dogs and let her yellow lab/corgi looking male run wild while she took pics of her smaller white & black dog. The male peed several times on our sun shade poles, chased the birds, and then around 4.30pm, proceeded to charge our two labs while we walked along the water. We tried to shoo him off but he'd keep returning. We thought he was playing but one such time he apparently got a mouthful on my girl's waist/ribs - we found the puncture after the lady/dogs left the beach. The emergency vet said the outline of the jaw was visible in her bruises and her abs were chewed up; she's healing well now after surgery. I hate the thought that this lady has no clue she has a vicious dog and that someone else/their dog(s) can get hurt. Lessons learned: (1) don't be afraid to ask someone not paying attention to their dog(s) to do so, (2) check your dog carefully for any wounds asap, even if you think the other dog(s) were 'playing', and (3) report any incidents at the time they happen and see if there are any witnesses, if possible (while tending to your pup's needs first). Note: this beach is on Navy property so the Lifeguards would contact naval animal control.

    Wonderful!

Spacious, clean, with very nice and responsible doggy owners who make sure their pups are behaving. We usually avoid it during peak summer times b/c the social scene changes a bit - gets very crowded and non-locals don't watch their dogs' behavior as much. Plenty of baggies, hose to wash off and even a small water fountain for those lower to the ground. Plenty of dog-friendly establishments, restaurants and stores, to visit after a great day at the beach!

    The Best

This wide expanse of pet friendly sand is open to all of our canine friends. Directly on the Pacific Ocean, with views of Point Loma on one side and the Hotel Del Coronado on the other, this spot ranks #1 in my doggie book.

    Terrific

Our favorite dog beach so far. This is an absolutely gorgeous spot, and dog owners are generally friendly and responsible. Dogs can run the beach leash-free. There are no fences or separate areas for small and large dogs. There is also an area to hose off man's best friend before heading home.
