Fort Funston

Located off of Skyline Blvd, Fort Funston is one of the best places in San Francisco to bring your dog for a day of fun. This recreation area has lots of room for Fido to run and play, several dog-friendly trails, and beach areas. Dogs must be on a leash in the Bank Swallow habitat areas. Keep an eye out for fenced or signed areas were dogs are not permitted, and note that the Coastal Trail north of Horse Trail intersection is closed due to erosion. Visit Website

    Our favorite spot

This is our favorite place to visit, we drive from sacramento periodically just to do the long round about hike that gives us both a work out and some socialization. be prepared for steep climbs to and from the beach.

Bring plenty of water for you and your dog if you go to the beach as there isnt any fresh water on the beach and a towel for your dog after as they will be full of sand.

    Doggie heaven

my wife and I call Fort Funston doggie heaven because there are SO many happy off leash dogs running around. there’s a long flat sandy beach portion to walk or run and a shorter hilly gravel/dirt section that humans will need shoes for.

There is a lot of parking but you have to descend a mildly steep sandy hill, so I would not recommend this place if you’re in a wheelchair or otherwise uncomfortable with that.

overall 11/10, this is my favorite place to bring my dog.

Long stretch of dog friendly beach

This is one of my go-to dog beaches in San Francisco. My mini aussie loves playing fetch, playing with other dogs, and taking a dip in the ocean here.

There are multiple entrances (one near where John Muir and Skyline Blvd meets) and another further down Skyline Blvd where it meets Funston Rd.

Both areas have nice parking availability. The one near Funston Rd has a more defined staircase, whereas the other one is more of an inclined hike.

Super fun, and definitely a Bay Area favorite for dogs!

Amazing Beach For Dogs And Humans!

Our dog LOVED Fort Funston. Both of us had never seen anything like it. To get down you go down a sandy cliff side staircase. The beach is massive and there are tons of dogs. All the dogs seemed to be well trained and mild tempered. Our dog was so happy!

    treasure for dogs

THE best dog beach. We’ve been going for 9 years. Best if your dog has good recall, because this place is massive. Easy to avoid horses by going north once down the stairs on the beach. It’s more of a dog beach than a people beach! Even if the tide is high, there’s plenty of room “on top”. Cliffs are steep though, and naughty dogs who chase birds or other dogs off the cliffs and get stuck on the cliffs will cost a lot of money to be rescued. If your dog is a crazy spaz or can’t listen well, might want to keep them leashed until down on the beach.

    Watch out for horses

Tons of other dogs off-leash running around socializing. The only downside of this place is that there is a horse ranch nearby that periodically walks their horses leaving trails of horse poop along the beach. The horses also startled my dog so be sure to keep a leash handy when you see horses walking towards you in the distance.

    Doggy paradise

This is a great spot to bring your dog, so long as they're good with other dogs and are good off leash -- because there are TONS of other dogs here, and plenty of space to run around. But there's no fences or anything stopping your dog from running off into the sand dunes or down to the beach, so be forewarned! But it's a TON of fun, and there's lots of spots with bowls of water for the dogs, as well as shady spots for them to rest on sunny days.

    So Fun!

This was an awesome place to take our dog, Rex. He could be off leash and run through the sand and hills among many other pups. And for us humans the walk was beautiful. It's definitely worth making the trip while in San Fran.
