Pikes Peak Highway

Fido is welcome to join you on an adventure at Pikes Peak Highway, a dog-friendly attraction in Cascade, CO. Enjoy this 14,115-foot mountain at your leisure as you wind up this alpine road. There's no better place to bring a dog or puppy than to Pikes Peak, where there are trails, streams and lots of room to frolic and critters to sniff out! It is strongly recommended that pets remain on a leash to avoid getting lost. However, leashes are not mandatory. SO COOL🏔

Such a pretty drive and definitely worth it! We were able to go all the way to the top. If you reserve a spot in advance to park at the top you don’t have to worry about getting on another bus with your dog (highly recommend). My dog did perfectly fine with the altitude. She had so much fun!

Nice little car ride with windows down

You will have to park before getting to the top but dogs are allowed on the buses just have to go to the back. There is a trail option as well. My one pup did have a little issue with the elevation so we did not walk the trails at all. You can stop at a couple spots along the way to get out and walk around.

    Pikes Peak

What's not to love? I guess that you can't drive quite all the way to the top! Anyway, pup rode in the truck, loved the cool air, and we had a blast. So pretty!

Pike’s Peak Literally Takes Your Breath Away

The drive to Pike’s Peak is not free ($15 adults, $5 kids) and is not for the faint of heart. There are lots of scenic stops along the way with breathtaking views. When we went the actual peak area was being renovated so a shuttle bus ran from about a mile down the road. Usually dogs are not allowed on the shuttle but the guy at the gate said they were making exceptions. However, the line was too long so we decided to take a short hike to get basically the same view. We were cognizant if the high altitude and how it could affect our pup, so he walked a little and we carried him a little. The views are stunning, and the drive up (and down) and a little white-knuckle at times. Make sure to have at least half a tank of gas, plenty of water, and a sweater, as the temperature is a good 25F or more cooler than at the bottom (and it’s pretty windy)!

    Beautiful scenery!

My dog and I went up to MM 16 (as of July 2020, there is construction at the top so we were told this was as far as we could go). Sadly, it was cloudy at the top so we weren't able to enjoy any great views from up there, but we pulled off at a gift shop around MM 7 and there was a beautiful reservoir that was so serene and peaceful to enjoy for a while. My dog did fine with the heights and I didn't notice any labored breathing. Dogs aren't allowed in the water, though, but my dog doesn't like swimming so this wasn't a problem for us. Dogs are also not allowed in any of the gift shops, which was a bummer because I had wanted a souvenir.

    Awesome Views!

We brought our little dog with us all the way to mile marker 16. She did just fine (better than me lol). at about mile marker 7 there is a fantastic picnic area that we stopped at. Lots of space to look around and have a nice picnic. It will be a bit chilly even in summer, but the smell of fresh pine at this picnic area is amazing.

    Wonderful view!

We took our 2 year old boxer with us to the peak. He didn't seem to show any signs of labored breathing. However, the top of the mountain was very cold, and there was a lot of construction going on (hence 4 bones instead of 5). There wasnt much to do at the top of the peak other than enjoy the scenery. Dogs are not allowed in the gift shop, so we weren't able to go in together, as one of is had to stay with the dog outside. The views are 100% worth it though!

    Amazing view!

This was a great stop in Colorado, the view was so incredible. I will say that you do need to watch your dog with the altitude, my dog was fine for the most part but I did notice him getting a bit tired and slowing down while we were at the summit, so I went and sat in the car with him for a bit but he ended up being fine! Dogs are not allowed in the store at the top so you will have to wait outside with them!

    Awesome, but watch the altitude

We loved our trip to Pike's Peak and the staff loved our dog! The only thing I would caution dog owners about is the altitude, just keep an eye on your dog's breathing on the way up and once you get up there. Our dog did well but just something to keep in mind.

    No swimming allowed

I don't know if the policy recently changed but dogs are not allowed in the water. We were told the reservoirs are the water supply for Colorado Springs. We were disappointed after making the 1.5 hour drive with our puppy only to be told no swimming.

    If your dog likes swimming...

what a great place to bring your water loving dogs. I brought my black lab mix Bruno here and it was amazing. he loves when I throw sticks in the lake so he can dive in after it...the scenery is beautiful and you can easily spend a few hours and not even know it. I recommend this if you love the outdoors
