New River Gorge National Park & Preserve New River Gorge National Park & Preserve in Glen Jean, WV, is pet friendly. Dogs are allowed on the trails that wind around the banks of the river which passes through rocks, rock outcrops, trails and coal mines. In the gorge, there is typically a 1,000-foot difference in elevation between the river bottom and the adjacent plateau. The park is 70,000 acres, ideal for hiking, rock climbing and rafting on a whitewater river. Take Fido along the 2.4-mile Endless Wall Trail which passes through rich forest, crosses Fern Creek, then zig-zags along the cliff edge until reaching the overlook at Diamond Point. See Details
Shawnee National Forest The dog-friendly Shawnee National Forest covers more than 270,000 acres in parts of ten counties in southern Illinois. The National Forest Service and Illinois Department of Natural Resources maintain dozens of natural areas for recreational use and several wilderness areas. From the 90 foot Pomona Natural Bridge to the remains of a Mississippian Native American village at Millstone Bluff, there are hundreds of miles of hiking trails to choose from. Trails range in length from the 150+ mile River to River Trail that runs between Battery Rock on the Ohio River and Devil's Backbone on the Mississippi River, to the easy one-fourth mile Observation Trail at Garden of the Gods. White Mountain National Forest Kancamagus Highway from Lincoln to Conway runs through the White Mountain National Forest in Campton, NH. Dogs on leashes and under voice command are welcome on the pet-friendly hiking trails. Dogs are also allowed at Franconia State Park under control, but not in campgrounds. Dry Falls Dry Falls is a pet-friendly trail in Highlands, NC. This popular hike and waterfall is located a few miles outside of Highlands and gives you the rare chance to walk safely behind the water flow. The 75-ft. tall waterfall in the Nantahala National Forest flows over a cliff, allowing you to walk behind the falls and stay dry (ish). Oconaluftee River Trail The Oconaluftee River Trail is a dog-friendly trail in Cherokee, NC, and is one of two walking paths on which visitors can walk dogs and bicycle in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This pet-friendly trail is a 1.5 mile one-way. It is relatively flat, but does have a few small hills. The trail runs through the forest along side the Oconaluftee River and offers beautiful views of the river. The Oconaluftee River Trail is frequently used by joggers, walkers, and bicyclists. Pets must be leashed whenever they are outside of a vehicle. They are permitted in all areas of the park except for buildings and areas closed to the public. Deschutes River Trail Deschutes River Trail is a pet-friendly path in Bend, OR. It's an easy, 8.5-mile hike in Deschutes National Forest that will take about 5 hours to complete with Fido. Set out on the Benham Falls trail and go 0.7 mile to Benham Falls. Another 0.2 mile past the Falls you will connect with the Deschutes River Trail. Please note that dogs must be on leash. See Details
West Fork Oak Creek Trailhead West Fork Oak Creek Trailhead is a dog-friendly, well-maintained three mile trail in the Coconino National Forest. The trail goes through the Oak Creek canyon with many different plants for your pooch to see and sniff, and in several places the trail crosses a beautiful creek. Your dog must remain on leash at all times, and you may be subject to ticketing and fines if you do not comply. Please contact the USDA Forest Service for current rates and fees regarding use of the trail, as well as fire danger level. See Details
Kejimkujik National Park and National Historic Site Kejimkujik National Park and National Historic Site is a dog-friendly park in Caledonia, NS. Leashed dogs are welcome to join you on one of the many hiking trails. There are easy and moderate loops that offer great views of the water and forest, or you can try one of the in-and-out trails. The Mersey Meadow, Hemlocks and Hardwoods, and Gold Mines trails are self-guided and the informative panels throughout provide details about the natural and cultural resources the park protects. Pike National Forest Fido is welcome to explore scenic Pike National Forest near Fairplay, CO. This pet-friendly national forest is made up of 1,106,604 acres, which offer dog owners sightseeing, hiking, fishing, boating, picnicking, and cross-country skiing opportunities. Dogs must be on a leash while in developed recreation sites, and are not allowed in swimming areas. See Details
Cheaha State Park Leashed dogs are welcome at Cheaha State Park, a pet-friendly recreational area in Delta, AL. Bike and horseback riding trails may not allow dogs for safety reasons. Dogs are not allowed in stores, food service areas, bathhouses, pools or swimming areas. Fido also cannot be left unattended and will be confiscated if left in a hot car more than 30 minutes. Surrounded completely by the Talladega National Forest, the park is ideal for access to the Kentuck ORV-ATV Trail. Additionally, the park is home to the Cheaha Trailhead of the Pinhoti Trail, which connects with the Appalachian Trail and accesses the Odum Scout Trail, and the Chinnabee Silent Trail. Proxy Falls Trail Located in the Three Sisters Wildnerness area of Williamette National Forest, Proxy Falls Trail offers amazing views of open lava fields and dense forests. This one-way, dog-friendly loop trail brings hikers past the 226 foot veil waterfall that is Proxy Falls. Leashed pets are welcome to join you as you take in the breathtaking scenery along the hiking trail. From McKenzie Bridge, OR, travel east on Highway 126 to Highway 242.
