Swamp Fox Passage (Palmetto Trail)
The Swamp Fox Passage (Palmetto Trail) is one of 1600 rail-trails supported by Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, a nonprofit organization that is working to create a nationwide network of trails from former rail lines and connecting corridors. Previously an unused railroad corridor, this "rail-trail" is now a great place to walk Fido in Awendaw! The map below shows a trailhead where you can pick up the Swamp Fox Passage (Palmetto Trail). Details about paperwork and cost of permits can be found at the town hall. Summer hours for dogs on the beach run from May 1st to September 30th. During that time, dogs can be off-leash from 5:00 AM to 10:00 AM and on leash from 6:00 PM to 5:00 AM. No dogs are permitted on the beach between 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM. Winter hours for dogs on the beach run from October 1st to April 30th. During that time, dogs can be off leash from 5:00 AM to noon and on leash from noon to 5:00 AM.

The Rifle Range Dog Park is a little hard to find, situated behind the Mt Pleasant, SC, Waterworks complex and Whiteside Elementary School. Park and walk down the forest trail following brown signs that guide you to the fenced dog area where Fido can play off-leash. Continuing along the short path will bring you to the salt marsh.
