Pet Friendly Brenton Arboretum
Brenton Arboretum The Brenton Arboretum is a 143-acre landscape in the heart of Iowa agricultural land. We have thousands of trees (all labeled, of course), beautiful prairies and wildflower meadows, streams and ponds, and miles of grassy trails. Our mission is to bring joy through the beauty and knowledge of the natural world of trees. Well behaved dogs (who respond appropriately to voice commands) are allowed to be off leash. It is up to the owners of the dog to use their best judgment and accept full responsibility when deciding whether or not to let their dog off leash. Dogs are allowed to swim and play in streams and ponds; humans are not. Dogs of non-members are allowed for $5 per dog, per night. Open 9am to sunset. See Details
Pet Friendly Big Creek State Park
Big Creek State Park Dogs are welcome at Big Creek State Park, where a diversion dam has formed an 866-acre reservoir. In addition to the lake itself, the park also includes shelters, picnic areas, playground, and a multi-purpose sports field. You and Fido are welcome to wander the 26-mile paved trail from the beach south through the Saylorville Lake area all the way to Des Moines. Big Creek State Park is open every day of the week from 4:30 am to 10:30pm. See Details
Walnut Woods State Park Walnut Woods State Park is pet-friendly. You are welcome to bring Fido with you to enjoy the 260 acres of woodland along the banks of Raccoon River. The two and a half miles of trails that weave through the black walnut trees, the largest surviving natural stand of these trees in the country, are a great attraction for dogs and their owners. Dogs are allowed on the trails, as long as they are on a leash under six feet and you clean up any mess they make after them. Walnut Woods State Park is open every day of the week from 6am to 9pm. Living History Farms Living History Farms welcomes dogs to the museum any day of the season. The farms is an interactive outdoor museum which educates, entertains and connects people to Midwestern rural life experiences. This interactive, 500-acre outdoor museum tells the amazing 300+ year story of how Iowans transformed the fertile prairies of the Midwest into the most productive farmland in the world. Walking trails and tractor-drawn carts connect the 1876 Town of Walnut Hill to each of the historical farms. Each site is authentically farmed or worked by historic interpreters. They also hold an annual event called, "Fido at the Farms," held each fall. They are open 8:30am to 4:30pm. See Details
