The museum is built and based on an actual archeology site known as Brown-Johnston, which was discovered in 1970 when they were building Interstate 77 in Bland County. The recreated village replicates that site post by post and feature by feature. They strive to tell the story of the Virginia Indians past the falls of the James River.
