Home to grasslands, wetlands and a heron rookery that attract a variety of nesting birds, outbound hounds will be pleased to know that birders aren’t the only ones who will have a great time here. Leashed dogs are invited to join their trail running owners for canicross on single track trails that wind through the protected landscape or on paved trails in the preserve for a nice walk at a slower pace. Moraine Hills State Park Dogs are welcome at Moraine Hills State Park. This pet-friendly recreation area in McHenry, IL, is home to all sorts of different wildlife, including red fox, coyote, white-tailed deer, eastern cottontail, mink, opossum, raccoon, and lots of different birds. Located near the Fox River, McHenry Dam, and Lake Defiance; anglers swarm to the area in the hopes of hooking a fresh catch from the water. For those who prefer hiking to fishing, there are more than ten miles of trails, some surfaced with crushed limestone, that wind their way through the park.
