Originally called Crab Meadow Park East Watershed, the Makamah Nature Preserve contains dry and wet woodlands, as well as marsh. The preserve is available for hiking, bird watching, dog walking (on leash). It has been reported that 94 species of birds have been recorded in and around the property and that the park is prime habitat for owls and woodpeckers. The park contains heavily wooded hills with one rising to 60 feet in its center and others rising to 100 feet.

Dogs must be leashed. Pets are not permitted in playgrounds, buildings, golf courses, boardwalks, pools and spray-grounds or guarded beaches. Sunken Meadow State Park is open daily.

Cathedral Pines County Park is a 320 acre site situated along the headwaters of the Carmans River. Adjacent to Cathedral Pines Park is Prosser Pines Nature Preserve, which features a majestic stand of white pines planted in 1812. Prosser Pines is a popular site for hikers and photographers.

Fire Island Wilderness
Rhythmic waves, high dunes, ancient maritime forests, historic landmarks and glimpses of wildlife, Fire Island has been a special place for diverse plants, animals and people for centuries. Far from the pressure of nearby big-city life, dynamic barrier island beaches offer both solitude and camaraderie, and spiritual renewal. The wilderness extends from the Wilderness Visitor Center, adjacent to Smith Point County Park, to Watch Hill. Though it is the smallest wilderness area managed by the National Park Service, the Fire Island wilderness offers big adventures. From March 15 through Labor Day, pets are not permitted in the Fire Island Wilderness area or on the beach in front of the wilderness to ensure that threatened and endangered beach-nesting shorebirds are protected.

Heckscher State Park
Your leashed pup can join you on the pet-friendly nature trails located in the undeveloped areas of Heckscher State Park in East Islip, NY. Pets must be on a leash no longer than six feet. Guests with dogs may park their vehicles in Field 5 during the off-peak season (September to late May) and Field 4 during the peak season (Memorial Day to Labor Day). The dog-friendly trail is accessible from the western section of the Field 5 parking lot. Dogs aren't permitted on the bike path, beach and playgrounds, or in picnic areas, the campground and buildings including the cottages. Proof of vaccination must be produced if requested by staff. Please clean up after Fido.
