The West Ashley Greenway is one of 1600 rail-trails supported by Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, a nonprofit organization that is working to create a nationwide network of trails from former rail lines and connecting corridors. Previously an unused railroad corridor, this "rail-trail" is now a great place to walk Fido in Charleston! The map below shows a parking area with convenient access to the West Ashley Greenway. The Swamp Rabbit Trail is a 22-mile walking/biking greenway trail that passes through the heart of downtown Greenville and Reedy River Park. Popular with humans of all sizes and their four-legged friends, the trail runs along the beautiful, meandering Reedy River, which features multiple waterfalls and is home to several of Greenville's finest ducks. Whether you and you pooch are traveling to Greenville, already live here, or are just passing through, you must not leave without hitting the Swamp Rabbit Trail.

Pets are allowed in most outdoor areas provided they are kept under physical restraint or on a leash not longer than six feet. Owners will be asked to remove noisy or dangerous pets or pets that threaten or harass wildlife. Pets are not allowed in or around lodging facilities. One of the oldest protected areas in the state is gaining popularity as a beautiful retreat in a metropolitan area. Formerly a watershed for the city of Greenville, the 1,275-acre Paris Mountain features large stands of old growth hardwood forests that canopy over hiking and biking trails, a family campground, picnic areas and Camp Buckhorn, a group-camp complex.

Take a hike with your pup through Sea Pines Forest Preserve in the Sea Pines community on Hilton Head Island. You and Fido can walk the trails and see a 4,000-year old Indian Shell Ring, a rice field, wildflowers in abundance, a vanishing swamp, and gorgeous lakefront views. Just keep your dog on a leash at all times in the preserve, and make sure to clean up after him.
