A Weekend in Dog-Friendly Santa Barbara

Friday
4 p.m. Casa Del Mar Inn
Start your weekend by checking into the pet-friendly Casa Del Mar Inn, conveniently located within walking distance of restaurants, shopping and beaches. The bed and breakfast offers a generous buffet-style continental meal each morning and an evening wine and cheese spread every evening from 5 to 7 p.m. Unpack and then unwind with Fido next to the fire pit in the courtyard with a complimentary glass of vino before you head out on the evening’s adventures.
6 p.m. Sunset Kidd Sailing Cruises
Embark on a sunset sail with your four-legged skipper and Sunset Kid Sailing Cruises. There’s no better place to drink wine with your dog and soak up the coastal views than on a yacht in California’s wine country. The tour is BYOFAB (bring your own food and beverages) so plan accordingly and pack your favorite snacks, drink of choice (perhaps a bottle from Santa Barbara Winery?), and dog treats for the cruise. During the 1.5-hour tour, sit back and feel the ocean breeze as your captain guides you through the American Rivera in Santa Barbara Harbor, where you might spot dolphins, sea lions and even whales. Departure time is adjusted each week as the days go longer or shorter in the summer and fall.
8 p.m. The Cruisery
Once back on dry land, make your way to The Cruisery, located within walking distance if you and Fido choose to “hoof it”. The uber dog-friendly eatery welcomes furry friends with a canine menu featuring full meals just for pups including the splurge-worthy “Birthday Dinner”, a dog bowl filled with diced filet and sweet potatoes. For humans, the restaurant’s artisanal cocktails, local brews and eclectic fare are sure to delight. Treat your pup to one of the special doggie desserts like a peanut butter-banana “pupsicle” or frozen beef bone topped with peanut butter.
10 p.m. Figueroa Mountain Brewing Company
Before calling it a night, stop by Figueroa Mountain Brewing Company’s dog-friendly patio to hear live music while you sip on a nightcap. You’re sure to find something to hit the spot from the brewery’s full line of craft beers, carefully selected local wines, and hard kombucha sourced out of Ojai. Raise a glass to your first night in Santa Barbara before heading back to the hotel to rest weary paws.
Saturday
8 a.m. Breakwater Restaurant
Proudly serving great American-style breakfasts from its 95-seat patio along the Santa Barbara Harbor, Breakwater Restaurant is a tried-and-true spot to break the fast with your pup in tow. Enjoy the fresh sea air as you dine on delicious egg scrambles, pancakes and breakfast sandwiches. Fido won’t feel left out either, because there’s a menu just for pups! Choose from two scrambled eggs, bacon strips, a chicken breast or a ground beef patty to start your pooch’s day off right.
10 a.m. Arroyo Burro Beach Park (Hendry's Beach)
Spend the morning playing in the Pacific with your pup at Arroyo Burro Beach Park. The park is a popular destination for dogs and their owners, whether for splashing among the lapping waves or taking a scenic walk on the bluffs. After you’re done at the beach, give Fido a warm bath in one of the self-serve dog wash stations for a small fee. Dogs must be leashed at all times while at Arroyo Beach Park; however, just adjacent to the park is the Douglas Family Preserve where dogs may roam off leash. Dogs can also be off leash on the beach just east of the creek.
12 p.m. On The Alley
For a delicious lunch that won’t break the budget, bring Fido to On The Alley. It’s the dog-friendly sister restaurant to Brophy Bros., Santa Barbara's wildly popular seafood restaurant that serves fresh fish tacos, burgers and salads within the beautiful harbor. Be sure to try the New England clam chowder or the fish and chips. Enjoy great people-watching and marina views with your pup from your table on the patio.
1 p.m. Golden Limo Santa Barbara
Looking to tour wine country with your oenophile woofer? Golden Limo Santa Barbara has you and your pooch covered. Enjoy a private tour in a sedan, passenger van, or limo as you visit pet-friendly wineries for tastings and sip complimentary bottled water and soft drinks during the ride. Golden Limo provides door-to-door service to all the dog-friendly wineries you’ll visit.
7 p.m. The Brewhouse Santa Barbara
Refuel after your fun-filled day on the outdoor patio at The Brewhouse Santa Barbara, located just a few blocks from the Casa Del Mar Inn. The pet-friendly brewpub offers a dog menu in addition to an array of innovative dishes and craft beers made in-house. Sample from over 20 different ales and lagers paired alongside yummy seafood, salads, steaks and its famous schnitzel. For Fido, you can select from chicken strips, steak bites, a doggy burger on wheat toast, a chopped hot dog weiner, or a marrow bone on The Brewhouse’s dog menu.
9 p.m. Mission Street Ice Cream & Yogurt
Before calling it a night, stop by Mission Street Ice Cream & Yogurt to give Fido a peanut butter yogurt pup cup. For yourself, choose one of the many flavors of McConnell’s Fine Ice Creams (Santa Barbara Strawberry, anyone?) or frozen yogurt in a cup or cone. End your evening on the lovely, heated outdoor patio with your canine companion while savoring your sweet treats.
Sunday
9 a.m. Helena Avenue Bakery
Sleep in and start the day with a light breakfast of delicious baked goods at Helena Avenue Bakery. This popular spot features delicious pastries, gourmet coffee drinks and breakfast sandwiches in The Funk Zone neighborhood. Best of all, they sell organic dog treats baked in-house! You’re welcome to bring your pup inside to order, but they’ll need to dine with you outside.
10 a.m. Santa Barbara Botanic Garden
Book the first time slot at Santa Barbara Botanic Garden, where reservations are required. This dog-friendly botanical garden is the perfect place to spend a Sunday morning in nature. Blaksley Boulder, at the center of the garden, is one of many big rocks deposited in the area by glaciers during prehistoric times. After checking it out, hop on the dog-friendly trails between swaths of desert, redwoods and meadows. Take in the views accented by the canyons, creeks and mountains in the distance.
12 p.m. Finney’s Crafthouse
After you’ve worked up an appetite in the garden, head to Finney’s Crafthouse for a filling lunch. The dog-friendly restaurant welcomes pups with water bowls and treats on its heated outdoor patio. Favorite menu items include the buffalo cauliflower bites, ahi tuna salad, Gary’s Pepperoni Pizza, Kalua pork carnitas tacos, and the truffle burger. Share an order of sweet potato fries with Fido, too.
1 p.m. Santa Barbara City College Trails and Depart Santa Barbara With a Dog-Tired Fido
Squeeze in some exercise and see first-class coastal views with your pup during a cliffside hike on the Santa Barbara City College Trails. In addition to the trails, there’s a big grassy lawn in the West Campus where other pet owners gather to let their pups run and play off leash. It’s a fun place to let Fido get his zoomies out and reflect on the fun you had on your weekend in dog-friendly Santa Barbara before you travel home.
