The most dog-friendly attraction in Oklahoma, Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge in Indiahoma offers visitors the chance to see the habitat of 50 species of mammals, 64 species of reptiles, and 240 species of birds. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has been protecting just under 60,000 acres here since 1901, making it the oldest protected wildlife area in the network. Leashed dogs are welcome to join their owners on a variety of trails within the refuge, ranging from the easier hike at Wichita Mountains Forty-Foot Hole to the moderate Bison Trail. When you’re traveling cross-country on Interstate 40, stop and rest a while at Wanderlust Crossings RV Park in Weatherford. The owners of this most dog-friendly campground in the Sooner State love dogs and it shows. There are several enclosed, grass pet exercise areas, a state-of-the-art pet wash station with shampoo, rinse and blowdry capabilities, an on-site dog groomer, and a gift shop that features handmade items from Etsy including pet beds, collars, belly bands, and essential oil sprays. Of course there are plenty of features for humans, too, like large, paved RV sites with lush grass areas, fire pits, and beautiful landscaping and water features throughout. Dogs of any size are welcome for no additional fee.

Five acres of fun await you and your pooch at Edmond Dog Park at Bickham-Rudkin Park in Edmond. The Sooner State’s premier paw park is divided into separate sections for small and large dogs, both with shady trees, agility equipment, and benches where humans can relax while pups play. Dogs are also free to swim in the shallow lake from safe access points along the shore.

Four-legged guests can sprawl out in the spacious pet-friendly rooms at Holiday Inn Express & Suites Oklahoma City North and go for a stroll on the grass that surrounds the hotel.

Friends Trail Loop in Beavers Bend State Park should be renamed “Best Friends Trail Loop” thanks to its popularity among dogs and their owners. This well-maintained walkway through the woods and alongside a creek leads to views of a waterfall and rock formations. Beginning at Spillway Creek below the dam, hikers can climb steep hills to get a good vantage point of the water. Friends Trail Loop is 1.5 miles long and rated moderate due to the incline. For an easy hike in the park, take the Tree Trail to a Native American sculpture.

There’s no need to travel far to get a good night’s sleep. Book a pet-friendly cabin at Beavers Bend Resort Park and hit the trails again in the morning.
