Situated on a 3,200-acre sandy peninsula jutting out into Lake Erie, Presque Isle State Park is Pennsylvania’s most dog-friendly state park. Hike along the 11 miles of trails that wind through wooded swamps, sand dunes, and pine stands. Then make a stop at the designated dog beach so your pup can splash in the water of Lake Erie. Bring a picnic lunch to share with your pooch, and end the day by kayaking with your canine in one of the interior lagoons.

All aboard the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway, the most dog-friendly attraction in Pennsylvania, for a scenic train ride through the “Switzerland of America.” Hop in an enclosed or open-air coach from the 1920s for a 16-mile journey through the Pennsylvania wilderness. On the one-hour narrated train ride, you’ll learn about anthracite coal’s role in the industrial revolution and enjoy stunning views of the Lehigh Gorge. The train operates on weekends and holidays from late May to late December.

Your pooch can take off his conductor’s hat and spend the night just a few minutes from Jim Thorpe at the Country Inn & Suites by Radisson Lehighton.

RV owners and tent campers can travel off the beaten path to a quiet forest setting with a stay at Knoebels Campground, the most dog-friendly campground in the state. Located right next to the pet-friendly Knoebels Amusement Resort, America’s largest free amusement park, you’ll have plenty of fun with Fido. Test your skills at one of the many carnival games or visit one of three on-site museums, including the famous carousel museum. Your dog will enjoy riding the 1.5-mile pioneer train that circles the park, going through the Twister roller coaster and into the woods before returning to the depot. In the evening, gather around the crackling campfire to roast marshmallows and kick back to admire the night sky with your furry adventurer. Dogs are welcome for no additional fee.

In addition to being the top dog-friendly attraction in Pennsylvania, Beau's Dream Dog Park at Buchanan Park in Lancaster is also the state’s best dog park. Inside the colorful space, canines can race across the 40-foot rollercoaster bridge, socialize in separate areas for small and large dogs, and get wet at splash pads. But the main feature that has won many a pooch’s heart over the years is the tennis ball tree that flings balls in all directions. Humans can enjoy the show from comfortably shaded Adirondack chairs on a whimsically designed deck that resembles a dock on the edge of a lake.

Spend the night in a historic townhome not far from the park, where your pooch can continue to play off-leash in the fenced backyard.

Witnessing a waterfall on a hike is an attractive prospect, but what about 20 on one hike? Falls Trail at Ricketts Glen State Park in Benton is a picturesque romp through one of the most scenic corners of Pennsylvania that is widely considered to be one of the best waterfall hikes in the country. Canines can cool off in the spray of multiple falls, including one that towers 80 feet in the air. Falls Trail is eight miles and rated moderately difficult due to steep stone staircases that carry hikers to the top of the falls.

Located half a mile away from the state park, Fern View Cabin has its own private five-acre plot to explore with your pooch.

The best pet-friendly B&B in Pennsylvania, Battlefield Bed & Breakfast Inn in Gettysburg is a real Civil War-era farmhouse with a 30-acre nature preserve on the Gettysburg Battlefield. All 12 of the inn’s suites are pet friendly, with four of them offering direct outdoor access. This historic B&B is said to be haunted, but don’t be scared when you see a soldier in the morning. That’s just a Civil War reenactor arriving for the daily history program that you and Fido are free to attend. There’s nothing scary about the pet-friendly amenities either, which include walking trails, a huge lawn for fetch, and a one-acre fenced-in dog park.

Knoebels Doggie Dive is a pet-centric pool party and Pennsylvania’s can’t miss dog event of the year. Enjoy a relaxing train ride together, drive an antique car, or ride on the historic carousel before heading to Crystal Pool. Knoebels welcomes dogs year-round, but pups are only allowed access to the pool during this special event. The Doggie Dive includes free rein of the pool for canines, gourmet dog treats to sample and purchase, and a chance to meet a few heroes from local animal rescue organizations. Knoebels donates all of the event proceeds to local rescues.
