Celebrate Cinco de Mayo With Your Dog

Posted by Erin Ballinger

Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican army's victory over Napoleon III’s French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. The holiday has become widely popular in the United States, and Fido won’t want to miss out on the excitement. Check out these muy fun ways to celebrate with your four-legged amigo.

1. Attend a Dog-Friendly Fiesta

Four-legged fiesta-goers in Madeira Beach, FL can “pawticipate” in a Cinco de Mayo 5K or Half-Mile Dog Fun Run on May 6 at Roc Park. After a night of tacos and “bark-aritas” Fido can walk or run to burn off those extra calories. Don’t worry though, once you’ve finished the race, food trucks and vendors will be waiting to help you both refuel. Photographers will be on site to take themed photos, so come dressed in your Cinco de Mayo best.

If you’re not in the Madeira Beach area, check out other dog-friendly May 5 celebrations like the Cinco de Mayo Jeep Night in Sante Fe, TX, or Cinco de Mayo Plaza Millwood in Charlotte, NC where Fido can enter the dog costume contest.

2. Dine on a Dog-Friendly Mexican Restaurant Patio

Sip on a concoction from the tequila bar while overlooking the water at Javelina Cantina in Lake Havasu City, AZ, munch on the Perfect Quesadilla at Diego’s in Newport, RI, or order a special meal for Fido from the doggie menu at Zorro’s Cafe and Cantina in Pismo Beach, CA. If you do plan to head to a Mexican restaurant on Cinco de Mayo, call ahead to ensure your pup is welcome at any special events they may be hosting.

4. Cook Up Some Dog-Friendly Tacos

Can you really have a Cinco de Mayo party without tacos? If you don’t feel like going out, set up a taco bar for family and friends with yummy fillings, toppings and salsas. Group all of the pup-friendly ingredients together or mark them with a cute sticker or card.

Use flour or corn tortillas (which are okay for Fido to eat occasionally) as your base. Fill the tacos with low-fat ground beef, turkey or chicken - just don’t go crazy with the seasonings. Other pooch-friendly proteins include grilled chicken, lean steak, eggs, bacon, shrimp and cod. You can also include veggies like lettuce, cabbage, sweet potatoes and cilantro, and other toppings like cheese and plain Greek yogurt. Keep Fido away from the guacamole and salsa. These contain avocados, tomatoes, onion, garlic and spicy peppers, which are toxic for dogs.

5. Make “Bark-aritas”

Cinco de drinko!

This simple “Bark-aritas” recipe will help your pooch wash down his tacos with a refreshing frozen concoction. It's non-alcoholic and doesn’t include limes, which are too acidic for Fido’s tummy.

Ingredients

* Chicken broth

* Ice cubes

* Cucumber slices

Add chicken broth and ice cubes into a blender and blend until smooth. You can also make this “on the rocks” by placing ice cubes into the chicken broth. Serve immediately in a dog bowl or a paper cup garnished with a slice of cucumber.

6. Give Your Pup a Toy to Taco 'Bout

It’s okay if Fido wants to chase the taco truck. This 2-in-1 interactive Hide a Taco Truck Toy Puzzle by Outward Hound will keep your dog mentally stimulated during a game of fetch or hide and seek. Hide the taco, burrito or nacho inside the truck and let your pooch sniff them out over and over.

7. Fill a Piñata With Treats for Your Pup

Everyone loves a piñata at a Cinco de Mayo party. Purchase a bone-shaped one and fill it with dog treats and toys. Even though Fido can’t take a whack at it himself, he’ll reap the rewards once it’s cracked open.

8. Dress Up Fido For The Fiesta

Your dog can don maracas, bottles of tequila, guitars, sombreros, chili peppers, and phrases like “ole”, “hola”, and “fiesta” with this stylish shirt.
