Pet-Friendly Rentals to Book for Next Year's Vacay

Posted by Billy Francis

This article was updated in August 2021.

The best pet-friendly vacation properties can be reserved a year or more in advance, which gives the casual traveler little chance of enjoying a vacation inside a giant Beagle, sleeping among the treetops or camping out on the "moon." There’s still time to turn your dream vacation into a reality by making a plan and reserving early. Don’t settle for second best, especially when it comes to organizing your best friend’s trip of a lifetime.

Dog Bark Park Inn B&B

Cottonwood, ID
“If I’m a large dog, what are you guys?” Photo by Melissa Halliburton

Located near the border of Washington and Oregon, you’ll find Idaho’s most famous dog-friendly landmark in the sleepy town of Cottonwood. Nicknamed ‘Sweet Willy’ by the locals, the world’s largest Beagle stretches to a height of 30 feet and is a featured attraction in the latest edition of our book, Ruff Guide to the United States. But this is no ordinary dog – it’s actually a bed and breakfast! Dog Bark Park Inn was created by a husband and wife team of chainsaw artists in 1997. The unusual structure has garnered worldwide attention as a slice of roadside Americana ever since, and travelers come from around the globe to spend a night ‘in the dog house.’ Even if you’re not able to stay overnight, you can still browse the gift shop and watch Dennis and Frances carve wooden statues of more than 60 dog breeds in their studio. Passers-by can even take a potty break in the giant fire hydrant!

No trip to the Dog Bark Park Inn is complete without an overnight stay. Inside the belly of the beast, you’ll find a queen bedroom and full-size bathroom. Additional loft space (accessible by ladder) contains twin futons and a variety of books and games. A self-serve breakfast of homemade treats is included with your stay.

Book early if you want to snag a stay at 2021’s most wish-listed property in New Hampshire, Tree House at the Shire. You and your pooch are invited to unplug and get back to your (tree) roots in this tiny cabin, where you can cook outside in the outdoor kitchen, gather around the fire pit and give Fido a bucket shower before bed. Dogs are allowed off-leash on the property, as long as they don’t mind sharing the space with the host’s dog and two cats. Make sure you visit Conway Scenic Railroad while you’re in the area. Departing from the historic North Conway Train Station, there are two pet-friendly journeys to choose from, and Fido will even receive a green Doggy Ticket prior to boarding.

Stargazers will relish the phenomenal nighttime views, while four-legged guests will appreciate all the open space. And then there’s the location: Moon Camp is just five minutes from Joshua Tree National Park’s west entrance.
