Don't Pant So Close to Me: How Instagram’s Top Dogs Deal With Social Distancing

Posted by Erin Ballinger

These days, everyone is spending more time at home. Social distancing and travel restrictions can be especially difficult to understand when you’re a social, travel-loving pup. Sure, the extra treats and snuggles are nice, but #adventuredogs everywhere are having to find new ways to survive while cooped up. We asked some of Instagram’s most “pupular” traveling dogs and canine influencers to share their favorite ways to pass the time.

Popeye the Foodie Dog

Los Angeles, CA
Churros make everything better! Photo by @popeyethefoodie

“Popeye is being a good boy and following our state’s stay-at-home orders. He gets his exercise with short walks around the block and a lot of indoor fetch. We occasionally take him for a car ride for takeout, but mostly do food deliveries to continue staying at home while supporting the local restaurant businesses. Popeye’s groomer is currently closed so he’s getting fluffier by the day. The extra treats probably don’t help either.”

“Mom is still working (she’s a veterinary nurse), so we are spending our time at the vet clinic supporting the staff with lots of cuddles and extra love for everybody. At home we’re enjoying long naps in the sun with our two cats! Our dad is a human doctor treating COVID-19 patients. So while he is away we have been FaceTiming with him and sending lots of encouragement!”

Mark & Mya's Adventures

“Mya and I are just chilling at home, doing the responsible thing. We thought about heading out to some local camping spots, but decided against that, as we should be an example to others and it kinda goes against the message at the moment to stay at home and save lives. So instead we are doing a heap of gardening and other housework that builds up when you spend most of your free time on the road. Mya makes a very good supervisor. We are also planning more around our next adventure, a 20,000 km + road trip around Australia that we hope to head off on as soon as this is all over.”

Boogie the Pug and Marcelo the Chi

Everyone could use a good cuddle right now. Photo by @boogiethepug

“After living in Rio de Janeiro for over a year, we made it home to NYC right before everything shut down. We had plans to travel to Peru and Portugal later this year, but those are obviously on hold now! Instead, we've been enjoying home, unpacking, snuggling a lot, and checking out as many dog-related virtual events as possible. We're taking this time to unwind, relax and recharge. The most important thing is that we're all together!”

“Hooman is obsessed with training at home. We ran out of quarantine treats on day 3.”

Casper the Wee White Dug

Edinburgh, UK

“Casper aka the Wee White Dug is getting through this period of lockdown and social distancing by going for his daily walk in the woodland, parks and beach near his Edinburgh home. He’s also looking forward to a camping break in the back garden.”

“Hello all you dope dogs and puppies.” Photo by @emi.a.dog

“I’ve been mostly sleeping and video chatting with my family and friends. Starting to get antsy to go on a trip so been hopping into my travel bag and giving my pawrents puppy eyes. I’ve even gone into my wardrobe and picked out some clothes to sit and pretend I’m in my happy place - the beach!”

Sitka of Long Haul Trekkers

Seattle, WA
"A-camping we will go … at home." Photo by @longhaultrekkers

“My mom and I have been taking the time to work on our obedience skills and get used to gear we'll use outdoors. We do twice-daily structured training walks in the neighborhood and are working toward off-leash running. Indoors, we practice "place" on the paddle board and spend about five to 10 minutes a day wearing Rex Specs dog goggles. My mom set up the tent one evening and we camped out in the living room!”

Roxy Foxy

Miami, FL
"I keep scrollin’, scrollin’, scrollin’!" Photo by @roxyfoxyh

“I check my news feed a lot more to see my pack. But you can take a second to enjoy the simple things like a good bath and a good snuggle. And if it gets hard, remember who you are doing it for.”

Charleston Max

“We have been practicing social distancing by going for long walks around the neighborhood and paddleboarding on the water in front of our house. We hope all of our friends stay safe.”

Dough aka Donut the Floof

Las Vegas, NV

“Self care is very ‘impawtent’ at a time like dis! For your health & your sanity, make a routine! Brush your teeth (everyday, not just in quarantine - bad breath ain’t cute). Clean your toe beans (they can collect da germs). Take a walk outside and get some fresh air (away from everyone). Eat something that will fuel your body (I like peanut butter, bananas and ‘chimkin’). Health is wealth! So stay healthy friends!!”

Dozer the Rescued Neapolitan Mastiff

Los Angeles, CA

“Dozer has been rediscovering his own neighborhood! Even though most places are currently closed, there is never a shortage of landmarks and street art in Downtown Los Angeles. He has also been walking to his local butcher to get bones to keep himself busy at home (while supporting a small business!). Since he hasn’t been able to go on any road trips, Mom has been taking him to drive-through fast food restaurants, just because he loves car rides (and cheeseburgers). While he has been enjoying this period of social distancing, he can’t wait to explore some new places once it’s over!”

Douie the Doxie

New Orleans, LA

“Loving my Quaranween and all the time I get to spend at home with my pawrents!”
