The Most Dog-Friendly Attraction in Every State

Posted by Billy Francis

Fortunately for Fido, he no longer has to settle for the same smells and familiar furry faces at the local dog park. The U.S. is getting more dog friendly by the day. From a tropical-themed indoor water park just for pups to a guided desert tour in an ATV, here are the most dog-friendly attractions in every state.

Alabama

It’s hard to believe Red Mountain Park is on the outskirts of Birmingham, Alabama’s largest city. Here, your leashed pooch can join you on 20 dog-friendly miles of trails, including Grace’s Gap Overlook that leads to historic abandoned mine shafts and views of the city’s skyline. If he doesn’t mind heights, Fido can also join you on three suspension bridges in the park that lead to incredible observation decks. Afterwards, let your dog burn off steam at Remy’s Dog Park. This well-maintained fenced play area features separate parks for small, large and special needs dogs, with open grassy areas for a game of fetch and shady spots under the trees.

Red Mountain Park is worth a second visit. Spend the night at Drury Inn and Suites Birmingham Lakeshore Drive and feel refreshed in the morning when you return.

Situated near the airport in Anchorage, Fido will love touching down at Connor’s Bog Dog Park. From skijoring in winter to swimming in summer, Alaska’s top dog-friendly attraction provides fun for all four seasons. This expansive park is made up of over 300 acres of wetlands, woodland, open meadows, and miles of winding trails through Alaskan backcountry that can be explored off leash. Connor’s Lake Dog Park Trail is an easy flat hike within the park that loops around the lake.

Petrified Forest National Park is considered one of the most pet-friendly national parks in the country. Fido can ride shotgun on Blue Mesa Road, a 3.5-mile scenic drive that features seven Painted Desert overlooks. It’s also the only national park in the U.S. that’s home to a section of historic Route 66. Leashed dogs are welcome on the park’s trail system, including the Historic Blue Forest Trail, a moderate loop that showcases stunning sand formations and otherworldly rocky outcrops. Pups who wish to run off leash can play in the Petrified Fur-Rest Bark Park. The best time to visit is during the quieter fall months, when temperatures are mild.

Reserve a room at La Quinta Inn & Suites by Wyndham Holbrook to stay close to the park and go back for another day of adventuring. This popular pet-friendly hotel offers rooms with hardwood floors for easy cleanup, and access to a pet-relief area on site.

Pick up a self-guided tour map and discover 210 acres of meticulously manicured grounds at Garvan Woodland Gardens in Hot Springs. This beautiful pet-friendly attraction welcomes leashed dogs in all areas of the park except the ponds. Botanists can walk through the amazing bonsai garden and meander along the woodland walk. Architectural enthusiasts can admire the latticework made from glass and wood outside the Anthony Chapel Complex. And don’t miss the most photographed part of the gardens, the Joy Manning Scott Bridge of the Full Moon. The 11-foot high bridge pays homage to historic structures in China.

Dine indoors with your dog at Pub Dog Colorado in Colorado Springs. This restaurant and dog park is a big hit among local pups and four-legged tourists. Head to the counter and order the Dog Pile Nachos for yourself and choose from a Pupsicle, Puppy Patty, Bacon, Bark Bowl, or Celery and Carrots from the dog menu. Fido can run it off with friends in the 3,000-square-foot, fully fenced, off-leash dog park. Look out for “pawsome” Pub Dog events like breed meetups and fundraising for local animal charities.

Bring your best friend for a casual coastal convoy around Cape Henlopen State Park in Lewes. With six miles of sand and no seasonal restrictions, dogs of Delaware flock to Cape Henlopen during the summer months. The park also contains a number of pet-friendly trails, including Gordons Pond State Park Area, an easy hike that runs by the pond, through a forest and wetlands, and across dunes overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. If you want to get out on the water, book a fishing charter with Katydid Sportfishing, or cruise with your pooch on Cape May Lewes Ferry. Both depart from Lewes Terminal just outside the park.

Brohard Paw Park is Florida’s real “happiest place on earth” if you're a pooch. Walk along the pretty boardwalk to the beach beyond and you’ll be greeted by one of The Sunshine State’s famous soft white sand leading to the crystal clear waters of the Gulf of Mexico, where pups can play off leash. Being able to swim isn’t a requirement at this wet and wild indoor dog park, where the water is only three inches deep. This fun pool is designed for splashing and paddling, rather than diving and freestyle. While your pooch chases beach volleyballs in the water, sit back and relax on an Adirondack chair under the shade of a faux palm tree and enjoy the show.

During the off-season, dogs and their owners are welcome to climb aboard the Gondola SkyRide in Stowe to the top of Mount Mansfield, the highest peak in Vermont. While you float 4,500 feet to the top with your best friend, take in 360-degree views of The Green Mountain State’s incredible landscape. When the journey is over, disembark the gondola and explore pet-friendly hiking trails at the top that weave through the evergreens and provide more angles to enjoy the stunning views with your pooch.

When Fido’s paws are firmly back on the ground, stroll back to his room at The Lodge at Spruce Peak. This accommodating hotel offers canine guests beds and bowls to use during their stay, and there’s a nice pet relief area on the premises.

If you’re looking for the “pawfect” place to view fall foliage or colorful wildflowers in bloom, Shenandoah National Park in Waynesboro is the place to be. This stunning national park has 500 miles of trails, all but 20 of which allow leashed dogs. For an easy hike, walk the shady pathways on the soft ground of Fort Windham Rocks Trail. Hikers who love a challenge can take Mary’s Rock from Meadow Spring to the summit and enjoy the Blue Ridge views from the top. Don’t feel like hiking? Cruise along the Shenandoah National Park Skyline Drive, which has 75 scenic overlooks where you can pull over for panoramic views.

Put your feet up at this farmhouse at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Your pooch will love roaming around the extra-large fenced backyard while you enjoy the view from the deck.

Fido will do a double take when he sees Double Bluff Beach in Freeland. Take the pet-friendly Whidbey Island Ferry to this picturesque island in Puget Sound. The off-leash beach boasts spectacular views of Mount Rainier, Mount Baker, the Cascades, the Olympics, and even downtown Seattle on a clear day. Spend a day wandering through the dunes together and take memorable pictures on driftwood-covered sand. Before you hop aboard the ferry back to the mainland, clean up your pup’s paws at the doggie wash station.

Your pooch will be dog-tired after a day of exploring. She can collapse in her room at Staybridge Suites Everett Paine Field after chowing down on a treat at check-in.

The Mountain State is full of spooky pet-friendly attractions for ghost-busting pups. One of the creepiest is the West Virginia Penitentiary in Moundsville, which has a haunted history that hounds will love to sniff out. This gothic-style prison was in operation from 1876 to 1995 and was the setting for bloody riots and fires. More than 100 inmates were put to their deaths here, including an unfortunate Bloodhound who refused to help search for an escaped inmate in 1907. It’s no wonder the grounds are said to be haunted by those who walked in but never walked out. Learn more on a private paranormal tour of the grounds or a historical tour with your leashed pooch.

Fortunately, you and your pooch are able to leave the prison after your tour and return to a more comfortable accommodation. This pet-friendly guest suite has a private deck and pet-friendly trails on the property.

Planning a pet-friendly boat tour in The Badger State? Dells Boat Tours in the Wisconsin Dells offers two pet-friendly excursions that explore the five-mile gorge surrounded by epic sandstone cliffs. The Lower Dell Tour takes tourists on an expedition through the wider section of the river and rock formations like the Baby Grand Piano, Hawk‘s Bill, and the Rocky Islands. The Upper Dell Tour stops along the way for Fido to stretch his legs in the Witches Gulch. This gives you a chance to admire the rocky landscape up close and watch a phenomenon called the Witches Bathtub in action. The other highlight at this eerie attraction is a specially trained dog who leaps between two cliffs at Stand Rock.

Discuss the death-defying doggy with your all-star pup back in your room at All Star Inn & Suites.

Situated between the Black Hills and Yellowstone National Park, Bighorn National Forest in Sheridan is a lesser known area of natural beauty that shouldn’t be missed. Beat the crowds in the neighboring parks and get in touch with nature on over 1,200 miles of trails with your leashed pooch for company. The Tongue River Canyon Trail is just under five miles in length and rewards hikers with a variety of untouched canyon and forest views. For an easier trek, walk along the Porcupine Falls Trail and check out the awesome falls with your four-legged hiking partner. After your trek, take a drive along Medicine Wheel Passage that follows an ancient trail to the top of the mountain range and offers incredible viewing points along the way. If you want to play it safe, attach a bell to your dog’s collar to keep wildlife like bears away.

Sleep it off at this stylish home in Sheridan. Hardwood floors make for easy cleanup, and there’s a nice outdoor space for grilling up Fido’s favorites.
