Best Friends Animal Sanctuary is home to about 1,600 rescued dogs, cats, horses, rabbits and farm animals on any given day. Driving through Angel Canyon, you'll immediately feel the peace and tranquility of a place where so many animals have been loved and healed from their hard journeys in life. There really is nowhere else like it on earth.

If you’re visiting Kanab with your dog, you are both welcome to take a free 90-minute guided tour of the nonprofit’s facilities. You and Fido can also relax at the wishing garden, visit Angel’s Rest, and hike on ancient Indian trails immersed in the beautiful scenery around the sanctuary. Just bring plenty of water and sunscreen. For longer treks, make sure to grab a delicious boxed vegan lunch at Angel Village cafe.

If a 90-minute tour just isn’t enough, you can sign up to volunteer at Best Friends for a day, a weekend, or as long as you’d like. Choose to spend your time at Dogtown, Cat World, Horse Haven, Marshall’s Piggy Paradise, Bunny House or Parrot Garden. Responsibilities include cleaning, preparing and serving food, making treats or toys and, of course, providing personal attention, hands-on care and love to shelter pets. Children 8 and up can volunteer with adult supervision. Volunteer spots fill up quickly, so be sure to schedule your slot in advance.

If you’re not traveling with your pet, you can schedule a sleepover with a resident dog, cat or bunny at an on-site pet-friendly cottage, cabin or hotel room. Not only is a night away from the shelter a chance for a pet to have some one-on-one cuddle time, it also helps the staff at Best Friends see how the animal reacts in a home setting. Knowing a pet’s personality outside the shelter is a great benefit for potential adopters.

Not able to bring a pet back for the night? No problem. Schedule a daytime outing for one of the many dogs at Best Friends. Whether it’s a pup who just wants to cuddle or one who is ready for adventure, there are plenty of places in Kanab to explore with your new four-legged friend. Take them for a hike on The Kanab Trails System or within the beautiful red rocks of Angel Canyon’s trails. The staff can provide guidance and maps to ensure the best activities for you and your canine companion.

Just 5 miles south of Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, you’ll find the non-profit’s newest addition: the Best Friends Roadhouse & Mercantile. Designed with furry guests in mind, the property features 40 rooms with some unique pet-centric features, like pull-out dog beds and pet cubbies. Other perks include a fenced pet park with a splash zone and dog-washing stations. Breakfast is served in the Mercantile building, where you can stock up on pet supplies. A complimentary shuttle to the sanctuary is also offered. Up to four dogs of any size are welcome for no additional fee.

If you’re looking to add a furry (or feathered) friend to your family, you’ll be joining in the mission of Best Friends Animal Society to “save them all.” Animals come to Best Friends from network partners across the country and are adopted out to loving families from coast to coast. A small number of animals that can’t be adopted call the sanctuary their forever home. If you’re not quite ready to adopt, fostering allows animals to receive one-on-one attention while also freeing up space in the shelter.
