Beer gardens have been a popular hangout for thirsty patrons and their pups since they began in Germany in the 19th century. Usually featuring shaded seating areas, grass or gravel, and entertainment like live music, games or TVs, these outdoor oases are the perfect spot to kick back with Fido and a cold drink. From Austin to Australia, check out these dog-friendly beer gardens around the world.

Königlicher Hirschgarten

Finding a table might not be an issue at Königlicher Hirschgarten, The garden has the capacity to seat more than 8,000 people. Dogs are welcome inside and out at this popular pet-friendly spot, where guests can enjoy traditional Bavarian recipes that have been prepared in the same way since the restaurant’s inception in 1791. Walk off your boozy lunch in the surrounding meadows and woods, but keep your pup away from the resident deer.

If you want to give Fido a new appreciation for mail carriers, reserve a room at the pet-friendly Sofitel Munich Bayerpost. Built between 1896 and 1900, the historic building in the heart of the city once housed the Royal Bavarian Post Office.

Banger's Sausage House & Beer Garden

Fido will adore Banger’s Sausage House & Beer Garden, with its on-site dog park and “Woof Wurst” sausages for pups. Join your fellow two- and four-legged patrons in the poppin’ beer garden, where the funky tunes of live Americana & country music can often be heard. Austin’s premier sausage emporium serves up more than 30 homemade sausages, 200+ draft beers and Sunday brunch. There’s no danger of going hungry or thirsty at Banger’s!

Austin is full of awesome pet-friendly accommodations, but if you want to stay a short Uber ride from the beer garden, check out Hotel Ella. Dogs are welcomed to this historic boutique hotel with treats, beds, bowls and a bandana.

The best way to spend a sunny day in Prague is by enjoying a Pilsner with your pooch at the picnic tables at Letná Beer Garden. Its stunning views over the old town and close proximity to great dog walks in the historic district make it a must-visit for two- and four-legged tourists. Food and beverages from Letná Mansion can be enjoyed in the beer garden. After you’ve had your fill, stroll with your pup along the Vltava River, the picturesque city streets, or the walking pathways to the serene gardens of Chotkovy Sady.

Across the river in the city center lies the art nouveau and pet-friendly Esplanade Hotel Prague. The hotel faces a large park where you can walk Fido.

The Olde Mecklenburg Brewery

The Olde Mecklenburg Brewery in Charlotte is home to the largest biergarten in the Southeast. Sprawling out over an impressive eight acres, it’s more like a park than a garden. Modeled after the early biergartens of Munich, the brewery is surrounded by 100-year-old oak, mature pecan and hickory trees for shade. It would be easy to forget that you’re only minutes from the hustle and bustle of downtown as you stroll the brewery’s cobbled pathways and discover shady tables, cornhole games and toasty fire pits with your pup by your side.

If you don’t want to travel far, stay at this bright and airy ranch home. The large fenced yard has a fire pit, making it an ideal hangout spot for sampling the takeaway beer you brought home from the brewery.

Brazilian pet owners are always on the hunt for unique and interesting places to bring their best friends. Located in the state of Sao Paolo, Toca Do Urso doesn't disappoint. This pet-friendly brewery is the first and only beer “lair” on our list. The spectacular indoor/outdoor space is a one-of-a-kind creation that was designed to minimize materials, waste and energy usage. The final product provides a respite for dogs and their owners looking to escape the beating sun. Cool rocks cover every surface, from the walls to the floor, while still providing a beer garden atmosphere for everybody to enjoy. Dogs are welcome throughout the premises.

When you're ready to leave the lair, make your way to the Hotel Village Inn. This centrally located, pet-friendly property has a tiered pool and plenty of shady palm trees.

People’s Park Tavern

Located next to Victoria Park, People’s Park Tavern is an ideal setting for a pet-friendly beer garden. Take a stroll around one of London’s most popular green spaces before heading to the tavern for a refreshing beverage. Although dogs are welcome inside, the beer garden is the place to be. The vibrant outdoor area is decorated with bunting and bright lights, and it offers a mix of long communal tables and more intimate booths. The staff provides water bowls for Fido, and he can even enter the “Pub Pup of the Week” competition to be crowned the coolest dog in East London.

Stay for a little while in hip Hackney with your hound at this plant-filled getaway that invites the outside in.

Noorderlicht Café

Situated on the banks of the IJmeer, the body of water that separates central Amsterdam from the rest of the city, Noorderlicht Café offers beer garden enthusiasts the chance to enjoy stunning views in sustainable surroundings. The café is made from reused building materials, and 90% of the menu is made up of environmentally responsible and vegetarian dishes. The contrast of the industrial backdrop with the natural flow of the water, communal atmosphere and grassy space for Fido to play fetch makes Noorderlicht Café one of Amsterdam’s hidden gems.

Drift off to sleep on the White Houseboat Prinsengracht. This unique pet-friendly Airbnb is minutes from Amsterdam’s most popular sights and has a nice outdoor sitting area with great canal views.

Hofbrauhaus Columbus

Celebrate an early Oktoberfest with Fido all summer at Ohio’s Hofbrauhaus Columbus. Dogs are welcome in the large seasonal biergarten where they can visit their own Hofbrauhounds watering station for a cold drink. Humans can order Bavarian-style food like spätzle, schnitzel and sausage and wash it down with a classic Bavarian beer, brewed onsite. Your pooch might even make an appearance on the Hofbrauhounds Instagram.

On your way back to your pet-friendly room at the Graduate Columbus, stop by Wheeler Memorial Dog Park where Fido can burn off the calories from his bratwurst.

Have you ever wondered how people let loose in the 1500s? They chilled out with a beer, of course. Cafe Vlissinghe in Bruges may be 500 years old, but in reality it’s timeless. Dogs and their owners are invited to hang out together on the grass in the historic courtyard. Sample a classic Belgian White and admire the pros playing the traditional game of Rolle Bolle.

In Bruges, there’s no shortage of historic pet-friendly hotels. Located on the banks of a lovely canal, the 4-star Die Swaene is an idyllic place to rest your head while you and Fido are visiting this architectural marvel of a city.

The beer garden at Pinellas Ale Works may not be the biggest on our list, but it’s one of the funkiest. True to its acronym, PAW is one of the most dog-friendly breweries out there. Its mission is to brew delicious beer while raising money for Pinellas County animal-related charities at weekly and monthly events. Drop in for Yappy Hour or visit for a quick sip in the beer garden.

Rest up in a comfortable room at Hyatt Place St Petersburg Downtown, a short walk from Pioneer Park and other pet-friendly attractions in St. Pete.

SPARK Social SF

Bark with your best friend at SPARK Social SF, a pet-friendly food truck park, beer and sangria garden in San Francisco’s Mission Bay neighborhood. Working alongside 150 different food trucks in the Bay Area, SPARK Social SF offers new things to try every lunch and dinner. Wash your food down with something from the Sip Bar like a local craft beer, sangria, fresh lemonade, boba and more. When the sun goes down, reserve the fire pit area for you and your pack to gather around.

Austria’s largest beer garden frequently hosts food festivals, live bands and sports screenings, and the lively atmosphere keeps locals and tourists coming back for refills. Let your pooch relax under the leafy canopy of chestnut trees while you sip on a stein or two.

For 5-star comfort in Austria’s capital, stay at the dog-friendly Hotel Goldener Hirsch Salzburg. The historic building dates all the way back to 1407.

Petrifying Springs Biergarten

Can’t make it all the way to Europe? Petrifying Springs Biergarten brings an authentic German experience to Kenosha, WI. This cash-only spot offers a menu full of European-style beers that you can enjoy on one of the many outdoor tables with your pup in tow. Although they do have a food menu that includes a sausage platter, visitors are welcome to bring a picnic with them. Fido can play off-leash next door at Carlisle Family Dog Park at Petrifying Springs Park.
