Escape to Mount Charleston

If you’re looking to escape the desert heat, head to Mount Charleston for some cool outdoor adventures with your pooch. Located less than an hour’s drive from downtown Las Vegas, Mount Charleston offers the chance to explore over 50 miles of hiking trails in a climate with temperatures averaging 20 degrees lower than Sin City. That means from November through April, there is snow on the mountain! The Bristlecone Trail is particularly great for snowshoeing, but the most popular wintertime activities are sledding, snowman building, and good old-fashioned snowball fights. In fact, there’s even a designated location for it at the Foxtail Winter Snowplay Area in Lee Canyon.

Following his mountain activities, your pooch will be happy to come home to a cozy cabin at the Mount Charleston Lodge & Cabins. Relax in a jetted tub, warm up by the fire, or unwind on a private balcony overlooking the mountain. Take Fido for a walk on the 1.4-mile Cathedral Rock Trail, which is located across the street from the cabins.

Explore Red Rock Canyon

For a day trip away from the glitz and glamour of the Las Vegas strip, rent a Jeep and take your pup on a visit to Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. Enjoy stunning panoramic views at several points along the 13-mile scenic drive. If the weather cooperates, venture off the road on a hike along one of 26 marked trails. Pack a lunch (and plenty of water for you and your pooch!) and find a quiet spot in the Willow Springs picnic area for a memorable meal. Keep your eyes peeled for dinosaur tracks in the Aztec sandstone of the Mojave Desert. The park is open year-round, and for visits between October and May, be sure to purchase a timed entry reservation in advance of your trip. If you have a second day to explore beyond Sin City, head to Valley of Fire State Park in Overton, where you and Fido can spot petrified trees dating back more than 2,000 years.

After a day in the desert, put your pup’s posh paws up at the Delano Las Vegas. The hotel’s Doggie Butler Service can provide in-room treat delivery, fresh bowls of water, daily brushings, and trips to the on-site AstroTurf dog run. Fido will also want to order dinner from the Doggie Delights room service menu.

Adventure in Reno

Reno, NV

The “Biggest Little City in the World” has a lot to offer visitors on two legs and four. Although Reno is home to four dog parks, the views from Link Piazzo Dog Park at Hidden Valley Regional Park make it the most "pupular" choice for locals and travelers alike. After a game of fetch, sample something from the eclectic menu on the pet-friendly patio at Squeeze In. A short drive from Reno is the year-round vacation destination, Lake Tahoe. In winter, beach crowds have dispersed and the area becomes a peaceful snow-capped wonderland. During the warmer months, there are miles of pet-friendly hiking trails, swimming spots and outdoor activities like fishing and rafting to enjoy.

After all the adventure, snuggle in at the centrally located Whitney Peak Hotel, just two blocks from the beautiful Truckee River Walk and adjacent to the historic Reno Arch. Humans will love the panoramic views of the Sierra, and canines are happy to have a dog park adjacent to the property.
