Take a Trolley Tour of Duke City

Albuquerque, NM
All aboard! Photo by Melissa Halliburton

‘The best first thing to do in Albuquerque’ is the motto for the ABQ Trolley Company. Climb aboard the trolley with your pup for a comprehensive overview of Duke City’s rich history and a unique perspective on all that Albuquerque has to offer. Operating twice daily from April through October, owners Jesse Herron and Mike Silva personally guide visitors on each tour. If it’s your first time in Albuquerque, choose the ‘Best of ABQ’ city tour. You and Fido will enjoy an 85-minute ride beginning in historic Old Town that highlights Route 66, Museum Row, and the Barelas Neighborhood, among other attractions. After being cooped up on the trolley, Fido can stretch his legs on a hike along the 1.5-mile trail through Piedras Marcadas Canyon at Petroglyph National Monument, where you can see up to 400 ancient rock carvings.

Hotel Parq Central is the perfect base for two- and four-legged tourists looking to explore New Mexico’s largest city. Your pooch will be welcomed by the hotel’s pet ambassador, Mollie, who personally delivers treats, toys, beds, and water bowls to furry guests. In addition, Fido will love socializing with other pampered pups in the hotel’s fenced dog run. For a longer walk, take a stroll to nearby Highland Park.

Enjoy an Out-Of-This-World Experience

Roswell, NM

The International UFO Museum in Roswell is committed to chronicling the stories and preserving materials related to the infamous 1947 ‘Roswell Incident,’ as well as other UFO events from around the globe. Put a tin foil hat on Fido and bring him to the museum to explore decades of supernatural history, research, and science. Before you leave, stop by the gift shop to purchase an ‘Alien Hunter’ dog shirt for your canine earthling. Afterward, visit Roswell UFO Spacewalk to take your pooch on a blacklight adventure through a spaceship and alien planet and view retro sci-fi art and unique space toys. End the day with a stop at Alien Zone for more souvenirs and wacky photo ops.

If the thought of little green martians doesn’t scare Fido away, book a room at the Roswell Inn, the self-proclaimed crash pad recommended by 9 out of 10 aliens. The hotel is centrally located to Roswell’s dog-friendly UFO attractions and Woof Bowl Dog Park. Be sure to snap your pup’s photo beside the alien sign out front.

Go on a Mountain Adventure

Santa Fe, NM

You and your canine companion can explore the mountains and canyons around Santa Fe on a guided tour with Santa Fe Mountain Adventures. With several half-day and full-day hiking tours to choose from, hikers of all skill levels are sure to find an excursion of interest. Take a four-mile hike though a magical grove of Aspen trees in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Or start at the rim of White Rock Canyon and descend 800 feet to the Rio Grande River. For the easiest hiking option, choose the Sunset Diablo Canyon Tour, which takes you on an off-road adventure in a GE230 Wagon or Pinzgauer all-terrain vehicle and ends with a short hike. Fun 4x4 tours that start with a history lesson in Santa Fe and end in Sangres mountains are also available. The tour company mascot, Murjo, might even join you and your pup on the adventure.

Santa Fe’s Inn of the Turquoise Bear welcomes four-legged guests with creature comforts including delicious treats, in-room sleeping pads, food and water dishes, and waste bags for potty breaks. Fido is invited to play off leash in the lush one-acre garden located on the property grounds. Afterward, he can snooze on the spacious main patio while you mingle with other guests and enjoy a glass of wine during the inn’s happy hour.
