Visit Historic Gettysburg

American history buffs won’t want to miss a trip to Gettysburg National Military Park. Walk through the battlefield with Fido or take a driving tour of the historic sites commemorating the battle that became a major turning point in the Civil War. Although dogs are not permitted in park buildings, they can join you at most of the outdoor memorials. Be sure to visit the Irish Brigade monument, which depicts a loyal Irish Wolfhound mourning the loss of his masters. After the park closes, you and your furry friend can continue exploring Gettysburg on a guided walk with Haunted Gettysburg Tours.

The Battlefield Bed & Breakfast is a real Civil War-era farmhouse with a 30-acre nature preserve on the Gettysburg Battlefield. The B&B is said to be haunted, but don’t be scared when you see a soldier in the morning – that’s just a Civil War reenactor arriving for the daily history program. Where else can you try your hand at firing a musket before enjoying a hearty breakfast in the morning?

Take The Constitutional Walking Tour

Bring Fido on a journey to 18th Century Philadelphia with The Constitutional Walking Tour. These two-hour guided tours highlight over 20 popular historical and cultural attractions around downtown Philadelphia. Trace the footsteps of the Founding Fathers by visiting the sites where American democracy was born, including the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, Franklin Court, Betsy Ross House, and Congress Hall. If all the walking has left you and your pup hungry, head to the corner of 9th Street and Passyunk Avenue, where you can choose a favorite in the longtime cheesesteak war between Pat’s and Geno’s. Walk-up windows and outdoor seating make it easy to enjoy the Philly classic with your hound.

Housed in a 1907 landmark building next to Independence Park, the Kimpton Hotel Monaco in Philadelphia is a great base for exploring the City of Brotherly Love. Canine guests will also feel the love at check-in when they receive a special treat, along with comfy pet beds, bowls, and waste bags for use during their stay. Pet sitting, dog walking, and grooming arrangements can be made through the hotel concierge.

Ride the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway

Nicknamed ‘The Switzerland of America,’ Jim Thorpe is a great weekend getaway for you and your canine companion. Walk your pup along the streets of the charming downtown village, hike the D&L Trail at Lehigh Gorge State Park, or head straight to the town’s main attraction - the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway. Climb aboard an enclosed or open-air coach from the 1920s for a 16-mile journey through the beautiful Pennsylvania wilderness. On the one-hour narrated train ride, you’ll learn about anthracite coal’s role in the industrial revolution and enjoy stunning views of the Lehigh Gorge.

Your tired pooch can take off his conductor’s hat and spend the night just a few minutes from Jim Thorpe at the Country Inn & Suites by Radisson Lehighton. While Fido relaxes in your cozy guest room, you can get in a quick workout at the hotel’s fitness center or take a refreshing swim in the heated indoor pool. A complimentary breakfast is offered daily.
