Posted by Billy Francis

From “grrr-uelling” races that will put you and your pooch to your paces to black-tie events where Fido can dress to impress, dog-centric gatherings are hard to beat. Bring your pup along to mingle with other mutts at these can’t-miss dog events in every state.

Since 2009, yellow Labs in the Yellowhammer State have taken part in the Mutt Strutt to raise money for Hand in Paw, a nonprofit organization that trains volunteer handlers and animal therapy teams to work with local medical centers, schools and human service organizations. Held in April, the popular event includes a competitive 5K race and a not-so-competitive 1-mile fun run. After the race, pick up Fido’s bandana and your T-shirt, listen to live music and visit booths at Mutt Strut Vendor Village while you wait to see who wins the coveted “Slowest Dog” award and the “Best Human + Dog Costume.”

Alaska

The Iditarod is the world’s most famous long-distance sled-dog race. Known as the “Last Great Race,” hardy mushers and teams of 12-14 dogs built for wintery conditions start the race in Anchorage and take on an exhausting 1,000-mile course across Alaska before finishing in Nome on the southern Seward Peninsula coast of Norton Sound. You and your pooch can join spectators in Alaska’s largest city to watch around 100 teams set off on the challenge of a lifetime.

If you don’t feel like racing in the snow, put your feet up and relax at The Lakefront Anchorage instead.

Arizona
