Pet Friendly Lodging

If you are traveling and want to go sightseeing for the afternoon or for the evening, what are you supposed to do with your pets? We have two very well behaved dogs, but the motels say do not leave unattended. You can't even go to dinner without the pets, this doesn't really make much sense do it? Any suggestions out there?
