Airline pet carrier size

I have a 10 lb Boston Terrier. He has very long legs and stands about 15 inches tall. I will be flying with him in May for the first time and the airline carrier size restrictions are 16L x 11W x 8H. I already have an expensive pet carrier for him that is 10 inches high. Do you know if the airline would deny me on the flight if I used my current carrier? Are they extremely strict when it comes to the dimensions?
