February Drive to Ft. Myers Beach

We are planning to drive early Feb. from the NY City area to Ft. Myers Beach, allowing 2-1/2 days---2 nights, with our 2 Portugese Water Dogs. AAA advised either I-95 route or I-81 further West, longer, but avoid Washington, etc etc. Does anyone have winter drive experience with this choice? And assuming we drive about 600 miles Day 1 and also Day 2, leaving a shorter drive Day 3, any suggestions for dog-friendly motels for either of the 2 possible routes? Thanks.
