How dog friendly is Silicon Valley

We are relocating from Sydney to California in June and I'm anxious about bringing our 8 year old cattle dog x. He's a rescue dog and such a sook but it's a really long flight and I'm worried about how he'd react to being caged all that time.
Then when we arrive (luckily no quarantine) we will be looking for a place to live close to Sunnyvale but I'd like to know how dog friendly it is around there - lots of off leash parks etc?
