Not as friendly to dogs as you've been told!

Bozeman sells itself as a dog friendly town, but beware! There are only five off leash areas, one being a fenced area for individual dogs, one a pretty lame beach. If you take your dog off lead in one of the many great but restricted areas, expect to be harassed at best, ticketed at worst. Many vocal people in this town are anti-dog!

Animal Control gotcha

Bozeman impounds dogs from parked cars, and charges owners with criminal animal cruelty. The city court requires the charged person appear, and collects large fines. There are no posted guidelines, either road signs or on the animal control webpage, and enforcement seems subjective and erratic. Some concerned civilians reporting animals in parked cars to Animal Control seem unaware of the difference between a dangerous closed car, and one with the windows fully open. If you will be leaving your pet parked at all, post your cell phone number on your vehicle. If you have to be away from your pet for a while, please consider one of the doggie daycare services in town. $20/day is much less than a $500 fine. (posted 09/2015)
