Santa Maria Valley Humane Society offers group dog obedience courses and private dog training sessions. Our training utilizes positive reinforcement which focuses on rewarding good behaviors rather than punishing bad behaviors. When a dog associates positive behaviors with rewards, it is more likely to want to repeat those behaviors and is less likely to perform bad behaviors.

    The six-week course will begin by learning how to connect with and understand the dog's thought process. In addition, we will be teaching our dogs about self-control. Our training is not based on "forcing" the dog to do something. We focus on teaching the dog to want to do the behavior, and the importance of the relationship between you and your dog. Once you are able to communicate with your dog, we will add in basic manners we all would like our dogs to have like "wait" and "leave it."

    We will also discuss problem-solving techniques for dealing with typical dog behaviors that most dog owners find a bit challenging, such as jumping up on people, barking, chewing and digging.
