Most countries of destination have different stipulations surrounding the transport of pets. If you're flying to Cuba, only dogs and cats will be allowed (regardless of whether the animals travel in the cabin or in hold). If you're traveling to Egypt, only dogs will be permitted to travel. The following countries do not allow animals to be transported either in the cabin or checked in as baggage, but only as freight:
South Africa (Cape Town) and Scotland (Edinburgh, Inverness).
Pets in the Cabin
Dogs and cats are permitted to travel in the cabin with Edelweiss Air if the combined weight of the pet and carrier does not exceed 17 lbs (8 kg). The largest number of pets allowed to travel with each passenger is 2, whether they are in the cabin or the hold. Pets must remain inside their soft carrier underneath the seat in front of you for the duration of the flight. The fee for pets traveling in the cabin is 50 EUR on short and medium haul flights, and 70 EUR on long haul flights.
Pets in Checked Baggage
Pets who exceed the maximum weight to travel in the cabin can be transported in the hold instead. 2 animals of comparable size and weight, less than 31 lbs (14 kg) each, may be transported in the same carrier together in the hold. Pet fees vary depending on the size of your carrier and the length of your flight. The pet fee for medium-sized carriers on short-medium haul flights is 100 EUR and long haul flights is 150 EUR. The pet fee for larger carriers on short-medium haul flights is 200 EUR and long haul flights is 300 EUR.
Pets in Cargo
Edelweiss' sister company, Swiss World Cargo, will handle any other pet transportation needs. If they're too large or your pet is traveling alone, they can be transported in this manner. You can contact Swiss World Cargo at (+41) 44-564-0000 for more information.
For pets traveling in the cabin, carriers must not exceed 21" x 15" x 9" (55 cm x 40 cm x 23 cm). Hard carriers are not accepted in the cabin, pets must be transported in a soft carrier. Carriers must be closed whilst on board and pet's heads must stay inside. The animal must stay inside the carrier, stowed under your seat for the duration of the flight. For pets traveling in the hold, medium carriers can have maximum dimensions of 23" x 18" x 16" (60 cm x 45 cm x 40 cm), and large carriers are anything over this size. Pets must be able to stand up, turn around, and move around comfortably inside the carrier.
Dogs and cats from countries that are known to have rabies may only be brought into the country with the permission of the Swiss Federal Veterinary Office.
