Finnair must approve all pets before travel, so contact the Customer Service Team at 877-757-7143 and inform them you are traveling with Fido. Make sure you have the dimensions of your pet transportation container to hand, as well as the total weight of the pet and the container. If your ticket includes flights operated by other airlines, you should check their regulations before your travel date.
Pets in the Cabin
Finnair allows passengers to bring small pets (cats, dogs, rabbits, and rodents) into the cabin on some flights. Pets and carriers must weigh less than 17 lbs (8 kg) to be accepted on board. Finnair recommend dog, cat, and rabbit owners use a soft carrier to transport their pets, as the animal will have to be stowed underneath the seat for the whole flight. Pets must remain inside for the duration of the journey. People traveling in business class won't be able to bring a pet due to the reclining seats. The fees for transporting a pet in the cabin vary depending upon your destination. Passengers taking Fido on a short haul flight are charged 50 EUR and 90 EUR for long haul.
Pets in Checked Baggage
Animals that do not fit the requirements for the cabin may be transported as checked baggage in the hold instead. Pets weighing over 88 lbs (40 kg) must be transported in a strong transportation box in the hold. Pets are charged different rates depending on your destination. Pets traveling on short haul flights have fees of 90 EUR and long haul flights have fees of 300 EUR.
Pets in Cargo
If the total weight of your pet and carrier exceeds 110 lbs (50 kg), the pet must be shipped as cargo instead. Finnair Cargo provides safe and quick animal transport services to most direct Finnair destinations. You can call their contact center in Finland at (+358) 9-818-501 to find out more details on conditions.
For pets traveling in the cabin, soft pet carriers can have similar dimensions as regular carry-on baggage. The maximum dimensions should be 21" x 15" x 8" (55 cm x 40 cm x 20 cm). Rodents must always be transported in a hard case. The maximum dimensions for a hard case are 14" x 12" x 8" (35 cm x 30 cm x 20 cm). Your carrier should be flexible enough to fit under the seat in front of you and your pet should be able to stand up and lay down comfortably inside. For pets traveling in the hold, carriers must allow the animal to stand, turn, and lie down in a natural manner. Carriers must comply with IATA standards and be large enough to allow pets to stand up straight. They can be made of Fiberglass, metal, rigid plastics, weld metal mesh, solid wood or plywood. The specifics for carriers in the hold depend on the animal you are transporting and their size. You can call the Customer Service Team at 877-757-7143 to find out more details.
