Entry Requirements

Complete the following entry requirements to travel to New Zealand with your pet:
  • New Zealand's entry requirements are among the strictest in the world, which is reflected in the minimal cases of pests and diseases within the country.
  • Dogs and cats from Australia, rabies-free and rabies-absent or well controlled countries are accepted for entry into New Zealand.
  • Pets must be microchipped, accompanied by a health certificate from a licensed veterinarian in the country of origin and must not have been under any quarantine restriction immediately prior to shipment.
  • Health certificates must contain proof of tests and treatments for canine heartworm, Babesia canis and Babesia gibsoni, internal and external parasites and canine transmissible venereal tumor.
  • Pets entering the country must be at least 8 weeks old and not over 42 days pregnant.
  • Within 2 days of travel, veterinarian must perform a final pre-export clinical examination to prove your pet is free of evidence of external parasites and clinical signs of infectious and contagious disease.
  • The following full breeds or crosses are not allowed entry: Brazilian fila, dogo Argentino, Japanese tosa, perro de presa Canario, American pit bull terrier. Dogs crossed with other species like wolf dogs are also not allowed. If your dog has ever been diagnosed with Babesia gibsoni, then they are not allowed to enter the country.
  • Contact New Zealand Animal Imports via email at animal.imports@mpi.govt.nz at least 72 hours before travel.

Quarantine Information

Pets traveling to New Zealand may be quarantined for up to ten days upon arrival.
