Old, not cheap
Ocean Beach HotelThe room I was able to book was dog friendly, but was a dark little room where I couldn't keep the curtains open as it looked onto the parking lot and there was no privacy. The fridge needed to be disconnected as it was so loud, and there were very few AC outlets for devices. All in all, a pretty regular off-brand motel but not a motel price. Three bones as it did what it said it did, but I would not hurry back.
Is dog friendly, that's it.
Days Inn by Wyndham El CentroI am reluctant to give bad reviews to dog-friendly places are we need them, but this was not good. It wasn't awful and as a bonus, they did not charge the pet fee. But the location is very loud, and the room was not as clean as it should have been. There wasn't really enough bedding for the overnight temperature, so the dog and I shared his blanket! Maybe there aren't good alternatives but the (more expensive) Hampton Suites is dog-friendly and would have been a better choice.
Great for dogs
ARRIVE Palm SpringsThe hotel isn't quite what I expected: it's adults only, but during off-season it was fine and the room large and comfortable. Various restaurants with dog-friendly patios are available within a 15-minute walk. There was music playing at the pool all day but in December no one really using it. In high season I can imagine that could be quite annoying if you thought you were staying at a nice hotel convenient for Joshua Tree or I-10 rather than a "resort hotel."
Ideal stay: recommended
Grand Vista HotelThe Grand Vista does exactly what you would expect: it is pet-friendly, and for those (like me) who care, it has a Tesla charger. The bonus is the pet-friendly patio for the bar and restaurant, right on site. The only negative I might flag is the AC is a loud unit, but relative to the advantages—and what was for me a very reasonable price—it's minor. Stay with confidence.
Not quite as cheap as it looks
Virgin Hotels Las Vegas Curio Collection by HiltonThis was a decent stay: self-park is easy and despite my misgivings, you can happily walk through the casino with your dog to the elevators. The room was large and very comfortable—often the pet-friendly rooms are the ones that need to be renovated etc., but clearly like the rest of the hotel it was newly renovated. I would flag the resort fee, not because the hotel charges one—they seem to be unavoidable in Las Vegas. Rather, it is that it seems particularly unfair to charge over $50 for "services" people with pets almost definitely won't use. But overall, it worked well.
Solid dog-friendly pub
Crown and Anchor British PubLooking for a place. could get to on foot from the dog-friendly Virgin Hotel, I saw the Crown & Anchor. It is exactly what it says it is: a pub, with decent bar food, that will look after your dog. The patio is more functional than charming, but has plenty of seats, and is also gated: they suggested to me I could let my dog off the leash if I wanted. Parking looked easy: my dog need a walk come what may so that made more sense for us. I would say this is firmly "functional" in terms of a road trip, but often, that's all you need.
Does what it says
Travelodge by Wyndham OgallalaI'm not sure why I booked this: I think I got confused about proximity to a Tesla charger, and their having their own. To be clear: no car charger, but the Tesla charger is about a five minute walk away. I learned something about the Travelodge brand: there are others around the world, but they are *not* the same thing. This is an independently operated place, using a Wyndham brand—and it is a pretty tired classic motel that I have to say I would never have stayed at. But, it was clean enough, dog friendly, located near where I needed it to be, and I wasn't disturbed. It was also very inexpensive: and I got a fair bargain to be honest. Really it's three bones at best, but they saw my beagle, and didn't charge—they're decent people, at a decent place. Just don't think you're getting any more than the low sticker price.
Basic, Good Service
GreenTree Inn FlagstaffI got to Flagstaff in a snow storm, and the guy at the desk was having real problems. This review is to recognize his hard work as housekeeping had apparently skipped off. That's probably not a five bone review, but, he was working very hard in challenging circumstances, and I got a clean functional room, somewhere to charge my EV, it was dog-friendly, and breakfast was accessible with no fuss, and in bad weather, all that deserves recognition. The negatives I will say for those not dealing with snow, are first, that this is an older-style property, with outside stairs to second floor rooms. Second, that side of the building did basically face the interstate, and there was road noise throughout the night. All these places are by roads, but the noise was noticeable.
Just about OK for the price
Desert Inn TucumcariThis was a low-cost option also near the Tesla Supercharger. It was fine. Two things I would note were first, that the proximity to trucks at the large gas station was bothersome as they idled, especially as the window did not seal properly. Second, as was noted on the review on another site, the electrics are not to any code I am familiar with: everything, including a fridge and TV old enough that it will have a reasonable power draw, is run of extension cables and adapters, and while I had no problems, this is not a great sign. But, the place was fine and dog-friendly places on a road trip are good in themselves, and I found the staff friendly and professional enough that I give this a solid three star: you will see why you are paying less, but they did what they said they would, and you can't fault that.
Friendly Team
Best Western Delta InnThis was a good stop, with facilities including dog treats on arrival, and should you want it, complimentary drinks and an attended breakfast in the morning. I was able to use a functioning car charger (note, there is only one), and the setting of the hotel means there is enough grassy space to take the dog for a reasonable trot in the morning. The Delta Inn delivered on everything they said they would, so no complaints.
Odd layout, but very comfortable
DoubleTree by Hilton Pittsburgh Meadow LandsOn the basics: the rooms are large, and comfortable, and everything works. I was charged a $50 deposit for the dog, but that never hit my credit card account as a permanent charge—maybe it still will, but it meant for an even better-value stay than I had been expecting. The place itself has an odd layout, I imagine because it has been extended multiple times, but that means a surprising number of steps and elevators, and it's really not clear where the front is, or even if it has a front. But, it was convent, clean, spacious, and dog-friendly. For those who care (and see my other reviews) I stayed hoping to use the car charger at the outlet mall across the road; that turns out to be up a steep hill and is not for easy walking. But, there is an Audi garage a brief, if road-side, walk away that at time of writing has a generous open-to-all charging policy.
In urgent need of renovations
La Quinta by Wyndham DemingLa Quinta always gets props for the dog policy—and the staff were super-friendly. Would I recommend this? It was inexpensive, but there was a lot of noise between rooms. The wifi was really not fit for purpose, with multiple overlapping networks, and the need to try multiple times to connect. The ice machines on floors other than the first weren't working—and had been left that way for long enough that there was a sign in the lobby. The curbs in the parking lot were crumbling in several places, and the room and bathroom were fine but very tired: for example the sink had a huge crack, and the bathtub barely drained. In short, this is not a good property: there has clearly been almost no ongoing maintenance, and if this were the first La Quinta I had stayed in, it would also be my last (thinking of a competing chain that features a red roof in its name, that I am not naming). Two bones feels mean when the staff were so nice and when they will take a dog, and for just $10. Equally, I don't really know how I would give more.
