Comfortable Bed, Safe Dog Exercising Area

Super 8 by Wyndham Concordia

The Super 8 was undergoing extensive renovation at the time of my visit which knocks it down one bone. The staff, especially Amber, was attentive and gracious, the room (king bed) spacious, and I slept quite comfortably. It is a Super 8, so expect it to be what it is (and it's also in the middle of Kansas and, during my visit, "enjoying" a lot of wind -- hot on my arrival and bone chilling cold on my departure). There is ample space out back to exercise the dog without concerns regarding traffic, and that seems to me beyond the comfortable sleep to be the most important criteria. There is both a microwave and a working (!) refrigerator -- sufficient to re-freeze my cooler ice packs. Overall, a serviceable oasis during a very long (1,400 mile) journey.

Comfortable Sleep

Holiday Inn Express Le Roy IL an IHG Hotel

Stayed in standard room with king size bed. If traveling alone (with dog) always choose that rather than the double queen. With the king, the room is sufficiently spacious. Has desk, microwave, and working refrigerator. Room overlooked front which could have been problematical, but I was undisturbed by any traffic or people sounds -- and Max, the Airedale, was similarly comfortable. Adequate safe area for him to "exercise". Typically good breakfast. Recommended.

Meh

Days Inn by Wyndham Bernalillo

I keep looking for something in the Albuquerque area that is clean, comfortable, and reasonable. This wasn't it. Staff was nice, gracious, and professional. Grounds were not maintained so in the parking lot, a lot of trash. No reasonable dog exercise area, and the one available was not maintained nor were there dog toiletry stations. So, in addition to trash, there was a lot of dog fecal matter. Room was large but then I upgraded to a business level room so it should have been. Wood floors which was good (from a dog owner perspective). Noisy. Noise permeated from hallway whether people talking or simply getting ice -- hmm, normally ice machines are not next to rooms but who knew? Room on third floor which was no problem for me, but could be for someone else. Light poured into the room at night through ill-fitting door and also the ill-fitting blackout shades. So, for a night, it's not bad; it's just not particularly good. Max, my Airedale, slept fine. I slept fine. But, I was happy to depart. Like the subject line says, meh. t'll do, but I am looking for something a bit better maintained. But, if a reasonable night's sleep -- excepting the hallway noise -- for a fairly low price is what you need, this will do.

Excellent Little Bistro

32 Shea

Fairly spacious patio, trees and misters, and very dog welcoming. Interestingly, not busy on weekend evenings but really active on weekday evenings and Saturday lunch. Food is excellent especially if you want to imagine Paris: wine and cheese board! Bruschettas are superb, and there’s a bit of a Happy Hour discount. Limited wine selection, but enough to carry the Parisian bistro vibe. Good beer selection. Staff is uniformly gracious, responsive, and attentive to the dog! And my dog loves the place. Highly recommended!

Very Average for La Quinta

La Quinta by Wyndham Albuquerque West

While still better than the nearby competition, this La Quinta is just average compared to other La Quinta inns. The area, and trash receptacles, is not kept up: too much trash lying about. I suppose it being at or near capacity might explain, but probably not. Room was interesting. I apparently decided not to get one with a microwave and, especially, refrigerator. My bad. Room was roomy which I liked. Desk chair was defective -- another indicator of neglect, in my view. Interesting shower (no tub; yay). Just a flat design which I liked. But, no shelves for soap, toiletries, etc. Room lighting and electrical outlet placement was mediocre. Dog exercise areas were quite good but again mostly neglected so lots of unnecessary trash. The hotel is right next to freeway so it's got a significant noise factor, but one cannot blame the hotel for that. On the other hand, the clientele was also noisy -- people and dogs up around 5:00am or so, loud talking in hallway plus barking dogs. Rude. Hotel staff, by contrast, was uniformly gracious, pleasant, and helpful. So, it's an OK stay for one night passing through, but one can almost say that about budget motels. Good staff, spacious room, decent dog area, adequately comfortable bed. On the downside: neglected maintenance, poorly designed (or maybe half designed) shower, rude clientele, noisy location. Not the usual La Quinta value.

Good Travel Lodge for Dog and Companion

Red Roof Inn Holton

Arrived late at night in a driving rain storm. Although the inn had suffered a kitchen mishap and was undergoing some reconstruction, it was open and the proprietor was immediately accessible. The room was as one expects at a Red Roof very dog friendly. Access to dog exercise areas was excellent both for bio-break and for giving Max, my Airedale, some room to run safely. This is one of my preferred Red Roof Inn types: interior hall ways rather than exterior room entry. As with most Red Roof Inns, the room floor was, to my mind, dog friendly which is to say not carpeted. Quiet, comfortable sleep after a long day of driving. Excellent value proposition.

Exceptionally Pleasant Travel Lodging for Dog and Companion

Heritage Inn Express

This little inn is off the beaten path which is to say not part of the interstate rumble. Room was comfortable for Max, my Airedale, and for me. Since it's located in a small town, access to exercise area, both for bio-breaks and for working the dog, was excellent. Overall, an excellent value proposition, and an excellent dog friendly inn.

Superb Lodging for Dog and Person

La Quinta by Wyndham Springfield IL

Among the most comfortable rooms I encountered during my trip. Aside from space and comfort for Max, the Airedale, and for me, it was remarkably well decorated -- very much more pleasant than the usual travel lodging decor. Access to exercise areas for Max was excellent both for bio-breaks and for actual exercise -- both so necessary on a long road trip. Overall, one of the best travel lodging experiences I have had, and an excellent value proposition.

Excellent Dog and People Experience

Serious Texas Bar-B-Q

Visited this restaurant on the recommendation of the nearby Hampton Inn staff; we had just come in from a multi-day backpacking trip. We were tired (in a good way), a little trail dusty (you think?), thirsty, and ravenous. Serious had tables up on a hill, properly distanced, but also inside in an enclosed patio. We took the latter during the evening of our visit, and the latter for lunch the next day. If the enclosed patio is a normal offering, then Serious is one of the few places which is "all weather", and that is really impressive. For food: it's a barbecue place. We took the platter (twice). Max, my Airedale, got most of the sliced turkey which he enjoyed; I taste tested it and also approved. The brisket was to die for. The sausage was excellent. My bother got away with most of the ribs. The pulled pork was a little dry; probably not quite to the standard of the other fare. For lunch the next day (it was a simple walk from the Hampton so we didn't bother looking for another dog-friendly place), we had sandwiches which were excellent; Max had the pulled pork stuffed potato -- he liked the pork and left the potato. Sad. Sides were ok: chipotle coleslaw wasn't really all the spicy, cheesy spuds were kind of dry, pinto beans (lunch) were excellent. The organized response to the pandemic was quite excellent, moving people through, providing food at the order point efficiently and expeditiously. Staff were gracious and responsive. The only additions I would suggest for Serious: provide a small dog menu (a place I visited in Alexandria Virginia did this; really innovative) and water bowls -- though they did provide wide mouth styrofoam cup so the bowl issue is really minor. Overall, good food, plentiful food, dog friendly and possibly all weather dog friendly, gracious staff, and an excellent experience.

A High Quality Experience

Hampton Inn Durango

Stayed overnight following multi-day backpacking in the Weminuche. Took a room with sitting area; essentially a small suite. Max, my Airedale, was welcomed. Room was well laid out. Bed was comfortable, but then after five nights in sleeping bag, our standards may not have been overly critical. A/C was reasonably quiet and quiet efficient. Window view was meh, but again, no hotel was going to compare with our previous week. Max's "exercise" area was not intuitive, but after guidance, was sufficient. Did not require the non-existent courtesy poop bags. We all slept well. Excellent guidance from desk for a dog friendly restaurant. Check out at 11:00 but not rushed. We hung out in a front outdoor area, drank coffee in comfortable chairs before departing for lunch prior to driving to our homes (Denver and Phoenix). Only additions I could suggest would be provision of dog water dishes in the outside areas; provision of poop bags and poop depository; and, a more intuitively obvious "exercise" area. The fee, Max's room rate if you will, was $25 so Hampton could probably be a little more expansive. So, one bone off for what Hampton could have done. Overall, though, the desk help was gracious; the sleeping experience was excellent; and, the overall value proposition was quite good.

Excellent Overnight Stay

La Quinta Inn & Suites by Wyndham Albuquerque Midtown

I stayed here in lieu of the Red Roof nearby. Same relatively sketchy neighborhood, but La Quinta seemed to be better lit and better laid out; it just seemed like a different neighborhood even though the RR was just a few hundred feet across the parking lots. It's a very dog friendly venue -- though unlike RR, it has carpet which I take points off for -- including a walled in, quasi-off lead area. The external dog walking and "exercise" areas are well marked and laid out. Room was large, bed comfortable. Oddly, the microwave and the refrigerator were pretty dated, but they worked. Nice desk for doing a bit of work before calling it a night. Good wi-fi. Noise of conversation in hallway was somewhat noticeable but did not affect sleep or stay; didn't bother the Airedale, either. More expensive than the RR, but I'd likely stay here again rather than the RR; worth the extra expense for me. Overall, a good overnight accommodation for dog and person.

Consistent Value

La Quinta Inn & Suites by Wyndham Columbia

I generally prefer Red Roof Inns for their more explicit dog friendly policy, but La Quinta is a very close second and very good choice because of its consistent level of quality. For this trip, I was on a long (3,658) journey including a few days at the Hunting & Working Airedale Nationals and a nostalgia visit to D.C. So, the La Quinta stay was overnight on the long drive home. The room was clean, comfortable, sufficiently sized (unlike, say, the more typical "trucker" motels one finds along the Interstate pathways), and welcoming. As I have observed in other reviews, ignore the boiler-plate material on BringFido about grassy hillside pet exercise areas; they don't exist. In this instance, there was a grassy area sufficiently close and sufficient for the purpose. One downside of La Quinta and many other "suite" hotels is that they have a limited number of dog friendly rooms, usually not including suites. But, for this journey and in this instance, that was not a concern. Overall, the La Quinta Inn in Columbia (MO) was a comfortable experience and a good value proposition.

Excellent Value - Excellent Experience

Red Roof Inn St Louis - Troy IL

This Red Roof Inn hit all the high notes for what one would expect of a RR: wood floors, sufficiently spacious -- not a trucker motel closet -- clean throughout, comfortable bed. And, of course, exceedingly dog friendly: floors as noted, exercise area (though ignore BringFido's "standard" description since that bears no relationship to any reality), and nice staff. Overall, an excellent value, and an excellent property. Highly recommend.

Meh

Super 8 by Wyndham Hays KS

It's a trucker motel. Room felt like a dark closet: small, crowded, and dark. Ok for a sleep crash: I got there after midnight and moved along on my trip later in the morning. Staff friendly and gracious which was nice given my time of arrival. Inexpensive, but not a particularly wonderful value proposition: you get what you pay for or maybe a little less.

Unexpected for a Red Roof Inn

Red Roof Inn Columbus West - Hilliard

This motel was/is a reformulated Super 8 or Motel 6. Generally, not a wonderful experience. Like all RRs in which I have stayed, does have wood flooring rather than carpet which is a very good touch for a dog friendly place -- not that we needed it. But, other than that and the price, it had little to recommend it. Staff friendly so no issues there. BringFido has a standard "exercise" paragraph for dog necessary. Seldom applies and did not in this case. Overall, I would not recommend this place if one is looking for Red Roof Inn quality. Ok for a one night sleep over and move on, but just understand it's a trucker motel, not a typical Red Roof Inn.

Excellent

Holiday Inn Express Washington Court House an IHG Hotel

Stayed during the Hunting & Working Airedale Nationals. Clean, well-appointed, and extremely comfortable. Excellent access to spacious dog exercise area both for necessaries and for exercise. Gracious, professional, and helpful staff. Very highly recommended.
